Five Takeaways: Bishop Ireton vs. St. John’s
ALEXANDRIA, VA — St. John’s closed out their regular season with a 56-46 win at Bishop Ireton. Here we run down five takeaways from this hard-fought contest.
UNDERCLASSMEN CADET GUARDS STEP UP
Led by 2020 guard Ishmael Leggett, who was a standout defensively, the Cadets held Ireton to just 14 points in the first half. Freshman Devon Savage, who scored 9 points, had one of the best plays of the game when he scored after a crafty euro-step. 2020 guard Darius Maddox, who scored all 7 of his points in the first half, went 2/3 from downtown.
HINES AND LYNCH STAND OUT
We mentioned how tough SJC made things for Ireton on offense, but Darius Hines and Ethan Lynch made the most of their opportunities. Hines, who is one of the top unsigned seniors in the area, recorded a game-high 16 points to go along with 5 assists, 2 steals, and just 1 turnover. Lynch, a sturdily built class of 2019 guard, added 15 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists.
EXPERIENCED CADETS DO THE LITTLE THINGS
2019 Jalin Abbott made his mark on the boards, where he corralled a team-high 8 rebounds. 2019 Casey Morsell, who sat most of the first half with foul trouble, scored all 7 of his points in the third quarter, adding 5 rebounds, 2 steals, and an assist. UMass-bound Tre Wood handed out 5 dimes, and Navy commit Richard Njoku chipped in with 8 points, 4 rebounds, and a block.
AARON LEWIS SHOWS PROMISE
2020 Aaron Lewis, who pulled down a game-high 9 boards, was a key contributor for Ireton defensively. He also blocked a shot and took a charge.
QUICK HITS
- UMass Associate Head Coach Cliff Warren was in the gym evaluating prospects while checking in on 2018 commit Tre Wood. The Minutemen have offered 2020 Darius Maddox.
- 2021 Ariel Goddot is a nice prospect for Ireton. The 6’4 forward, who recorded 7 points on 3 of 6 from the field, showcased a very high motor.
- Another player who played with a high motor for Ireton was 2019 guard Jack Kouba. He was all over the passing lanes, and crashed the boards consistently.
- 2020 James Berry has solid defensive potential when considering his length and ability to rebound out of his area. He should only improve as he gains confidence and grows into his body.
