The Blaze (26-0) scorched the Oakland Patriots (17-8) on Senior night 49-45, ripping apart a deficit to finish their regular season undefeated.

Oakland pummeled Blackman early.  At one point it was 16-8 Oakland on top.  Early leads are ordinarily Blackman’s thing.  Despite a 10-point Patriot halftime lead Blackman owned the third quarter and pulled away when it mattered.

The Prize

Keishawn Davison (@PrepHoopsTN #9) played a nearly perfect opening half.  The 5-foot-10 point guard moved the basketball with purpose and took and made every open attempt.  Davison delivered a dud last month against Blackman.  This game clearly meant a lot to him and his skills shone through in the opening frame.

The junior’s scoring did taper off swiftly after the break though.  Playing in front of Middle Tennessee Head Coach Kermit Davis, Davison finished with 12 points, six rebounds, and five assists. One glaring flaw was his efficiency.  Davison made just 3-15 field goals in the loss.

Advancing his Career

Brandon Thomas (@PrepHoopsTN #82) suffers from short bigman syndrome.  The syndrome tends to prematurely end basketabll careers.  In an effort to fix that ailment, Thomas began shooting more outside shots during the run of play.  Thomas hit two imperative three-pointers Friday night to stem the flow of enthusiasm emanating on and behind the Oakland Patriot bench.

Old Steady

Proven winner Trent Gibson (Blackman) scored consistently throughout the game and finished with 16 points.  Judging purely by Coach Wortman’s substitution choices Gibson missed less than a minute for foul accumulation.

He does and did rebound, pass, provide courage, leadership, calmness.

If there is a flaw to his game, Gibson sporadically has games where he misses an unseemly amount of free throws.  It happened again Friday as the 6-foot-4 guard missed five of his ten attempts.

Young McDonald Had a Game

DeArre McDonald provided toughness and points against a significant rival.  The expectation for hot-house games is that seniors are going to display the correct mindframe for success.

Class of 2020 wing DeArre played big in spite of his inexperience.  The Patriot scored 13 points and pulled down six rebounds.

His biggest singular play came early in the fourth quarter, as he drew a charge on Trent Gibson.  The charge was the fourth foul on Gibson and a less mature young man than Gibson would have lost his focus, possibly even his availability in the ensuing minutes.

Turning the Page to Page

While Blackman features a strong senior class the clock is ticking down on what will ultimately a memorable 2017-2018 season and when it does the perennially dominant Blaze Head Coach Barry Wortman will have to find four new starters.

In the second quarter Jalen Page (2020) proved he is ready to be one of those starters.  Facing a rare scoring deficit, Blackman needed an infusion of energy.  The Senior Night festivities added to Oakland’s ordinarily impressive homecourt advantage.  The 16-8 Oakland lead needed to be sliced up by Blackman and Jalen Page came through.  Page caused a steal at the head of a 1-3-1 zone.  It quickly turned into a solitary figure fastbreak culminating in an impressive one-handed jam.
