#1 McEachern High School (Powder Springs, GA) – 24-2
The Indians have only lost 3 games in the last two seasons and 1 game against GHSA teams in two seasons. Coach Thompson and his staff have captured their fourth consecutive region championship and are 99-15 since the 2014-2015 season. 2019 forward Isaac Okoro was recently named Region 3 7A player of the year and 1st team All Cobb County public schools, along with his backcourt mate 2020 PG Sharife Cooper, who was also named 1st team all region for Region 3 7A. McEachern was recently eligible for the Dicks Nationals High School Showcase, which is played in New York this season from March 29th-31st. All McEachern has to do is win the class 7A Georgia state championship and then they will be on their way to New York. The road to Dick’s begins next Friday night at McEachern as they host Walton High School in the first round of the class 7A state tournament. Isaac is averaging 18.7 points per game, which ranks 4th in the County, and Sharife is averaging 18.9 points per game, which ranks 3rd in the County, coming into this one. There is a possibility that McEachern will be traveling to Norcross for an elite 8 matchup in the class 7A state tournament and Norcross High School is one of the best teams in the state. Let us pray this matchup happens.
#5 Kennesaw Mountain High School (Kennesaw, GA) – 18-9
After a 10-18 year last season, the Kennesaw Mountain Mustangs are one of the most improved teams in the state at 18-9. The Mustangs finished the season 2nd in their region, Region 3 7A, after losing to McEachern in the Region 3 7A championship. 2019 wing Jalyn McCreary, who is averaging 18.6 points per game , was recently named to 1st team all region for Region 3 7A and 2nd team All Cobb County. 2018 guard Josh Strong, who is averaging 19 points per game, was recently named 1st team all region for Region 3 7A and 2nd team All Cobb County. The Mustangs will host Woodstock in their first matchup of the state tournament in class 7A.
#9 North Cobb High School (Acworth, GA) – 14-12
The North Cobb Warriors have received the most improved team award recently. After a 3-20 season last year, North Cobb has improved this year to 14-12 and headed to the class 7A state tournament. 2019 forward Kevin Hester has headlined this season’s Warrior squad with performance on the court. Kevin ranks second in double doubles in Cobb County public school rankings. He was recently named all region 1st team for Region 3 7A and 2nd team All Cobb County after averaging 15.7 points per game and 12.6 rebounds per game. North Cobb will be facing Etowah High School, the current Region 4 7A champions, in the first round of the class 7A state tournament.
#13 Hillgrove High School (Powder Springs, GA) – 11-14
Hillgrove punched their ticket into the state tournament after their region tournament win over Marietta High School last Tuesday. Hillgrove will travel to Roswell Friday night in the first round of the class 7A state tournament. 2019 point guard Orry Owens was recently named 2nd team all region for Region 3 7A. Orry has had a good season for Hillgrove and was one of the leaders for his squad. Owens was also named on the All Cobb County Honorable Mentions list.
#17 Osborne High School (Marietta, GA) – 1-23
The Cardinals finished with one of the worst records in the state of Georgia. This season’s Osborne team was also one of the youngest teams in the state. This young squad has a chance to bounce back next year after their varsity experience this year. 2020 point guard Matthew Smith is one of the names I would remember as he led Osborne in scoring this season. The Cardinals season offically ended after their region lost to Dalton High School in the Region 6 class 6A region tournament last Monday night.
