2019 Spanish River Guard Charles West Talks Team Concepts, Success
Prep Hoops: What are some of the key components to the team’s success this season and how would you best describe this core and the style of basketball employed in this system?
CW: The key to this team’s success is really how fast we move up and down the court. We play really at a fast pace and we love to shoot and attack the basket. We have very good chemistry and we trust each other. That is what is going to help us get through very tough playoff games. We have a very strong core, we have four players who are currently averaging double digits this season.
This includes Jashone Anderson, Malaccai Davis, Charles West (myself), and Jeremy Hock. We’ve got a strong bench and everyone knows how to play their role. That is what makes this team so special.
PH: It’s no secret, now is an exciting time for Palm Beach County basketball. How would you describe the rivalries between local opponents and the competition in this area?
CW: Rivalries are always intense, especially when we play Boca High. When we play teams in our district, the competition level is very high. I would say we have one of the most competitive districts in the county. With it being the end of the regular season, everyone is trying to fight for a good seeding going into the district tournament. So, that brings the competition level up even more.
PH: How would you describe your role on this squad and what are you tasked with on a day to day basis?
CW: My role on this team is to shoot 3-pointers with efficiency, score the ball, and play lockdown defense.
PH: One aspect that’s noticeable about this team is how well you guys move the ball around and find each other in the half court set and open court. Which factors do you attribute to how well this team moves the ball?
CW: Everyone on this team trusts each other, so when we are moving the ball around we have trust that the next person is going to make the right play. Even outside of basketball, we are all good friends and we all like playing alongside each other.
