2018 Top PF’s
With the 2018 rankings release, we’re taking a look at the top-5 power forwards for the senior class. Prep Hoops Colorado takes an in-depth look at each player, says what makes them special and what the state tournament holds for them.
1) William Becker-Smoky Hill-Overall Class Rank #5
Becker is arguably one of the best dunkers in the state and you wouldn’t know it with his finesse yet powerful game. He’s been playing well and has been one of the states elite guys for the past two years. What he lacks in points he makes up for in rebounds and blocked shots. The 6’9 wing player dares players to come to the paint and doesn’t welcome visitors politely. Something that goes overlooked with Will’s blocks are is his ability to keep the ball in play and give his teammates a chance to run out for a fast break. Will is Smoky Hill’s do-it-all type of player and his career stats of 8.7pts, 2.0 ast, 10.3rebs, 1.2 steals and big 4blks a game on such a well-balanced team doesn’t completely show the type of player that he is. Make no mistake about it, he’s one of the best players in the state and the top power forward in this class.
2) John Harge-Smoky Hill-Overall Class Rank #9
The X-factor on a Smoky Hill team looking to prove they’re a top team in the state despite losing questionable games is John. John is a player that can extend the floor and get out on the perimeter, but he seems to be at his best when he is playing the point-forward spot as he has the ability to create mismatches. He uses his body and quick handle to get through the defense for the easy set up for a teammate or he’s been known to dunk on a defender or two if they’re late. When Smoky uses their bigs to expose some of mismatches they create, they’re one of the most dangerous teams in the state. They have a tough journey ahead of them with the state playoffs but with Harge at the helm they’ll always have the chance and I believe he has a big game in him that gets them back in the groove.
3) Mohamed Diallo-George Washington-Overall Class Rank #31
Diallo is one of those special type of players that we don’t see often in high school that can take over the game from the mid-range area. He’s not a player that forces many shots but lets the game come do him without having to have plays ran for him to contribute. Mo is arguably the most consistent scorer on this talented George Washington team and there was a four-game stretch that he was on a tear. Not only has he been contributing on the offensive end, but he’s been proving that he’s a player that can do it in a variety of ways on the offensive end. His monster dunk against Rangeview weeks ago is a play that still sticks with me.
4) Luke Martin-Cheyenne Mountain-Overall Class Rank #45
At the beginning of the season it looked as if Cheyenne Mountain would have a decent year. maybe even get an above average seeding in the state tournament with the way that Luke was playing. He was posting double-doubles every other night and showed that he wanted different results than what the team did last year. A year later and the Indians came out and showed their improvement and have made some noise in the Colorado Springs area. Luke showed that he’s for real as he put up 14.6pts, 2.8asr, 8.2rebs and 1.9blks a game and had the team progress, even if it wasn’t the results they were expecting.
5) Trey McBride-Fort Morgan-Overall Class Rank #33
Trey is a four-year starter out of Fort Morgan with over 1200 total points on 51% and over 700 rebounds for his career. The way that he looks on the court and takes over with his pure size and strength separates him from other players in the state and he’s dominating in his class. He made himself known in his sophomore season when he averaged 16.1 points and 10.6 rebounds along with 2.2 steals. In a mediocre overall season at 13-11 the Mustangs went 7-1 in league play which got them 29th seed in the 4A state tournament with a chance to make some noise against number 4 seed Falcon on Saturday so expect for them to run through their big man and if they lose to a talented team, expect him to give his all in the game. He had a great career for Fort Morgan and deserves the attention.
