1A Mr. Basketball Candidates
With teams gearing up for the state tournament, here are a list of the top prospects from 1A who have aided their teams in being at the top of 1A. These prospects have done enough to earn consideration for the Mr. Basketball award. Further, they are prospects who will make a lot of noise in the upcoming state tournament.
1A Mr. Basketball Candidates
Addison Mort 6’3 PG/SG 2018 The Gregory School
Mort has stepped up, as expected, with the departure of talented prospects from last season. His strong play has Gregory atop the rankings for 1A. Mort is an efficient scorer who makes a number of game changing plays which will make Gregory a tough out in the state tournament. Assuming Gregory wins the state championship, he will be the most likely candidate to win the player of the year for this classification as well.
Trey Wood 6’9 PF 2018 Anthem Prep (Portland State)
Wood brings length and a versatile skill set to Anthem Prep. Due to all of the things that he brings to the table, Anthem Prep is a team that few will want to match-up with come the state tournament. He is capable of finishing around the rim and shooting it from deep. Few teams at this level have anyone who is versatile enough to guard him. Wood will make a huge impact in the state tournament.
Shekeedren Bryant 6’5 SF/PF 2019 NFL Yet
Bryant is strong, physical, and athletic. Further, he is a capable shooter from deep. Much like Wood, he is a nightmare at the 1A level as few teams have prospects who are versatile enough to guard all of the things that he can do. He makes NFL Yet a state title type team as he can do a little bit of everything while being a solid defender.
Tyler Behrend 6’6 SG/SF 2018 Valley Lutheran
Behrend, much like the other prospects on this list, is a length 2/3 who can cause mismatch nightmares for opposing teams. Further, he has a solid teammate in the backcourt who will help him in making a potential title run with Valley Lutheran. The success of the team and the scoring that he has produced this season has earned him a spot on the list of potential 1A Mr. Basketball candidates.
Matt Fields 6’2 SG 2018 Joseph City
Fields and Joseph City are having a strong season. Despite being undersized, Fields is a monster on the glass and a double-double nightmare. His ability to create extra opportunities for Joseph City has aided this team greatly in their success. Further, he has a good feel for the game and gets his teammates involved well while being able to hit it from deep. Keep an eye on Joseph City in the state tournament.
