Week 7 Rankings Update
It was another eventful week around the state, with plenty of ranked teams losing to unranked teams, which led to an awful lot of shakeup in the rankings heading into Week Seven of the season. We take a look at some of the major changes below.
The top five remains the same in Class 1A, despite a loss by No. 5 Lynnville-Sully. That Hawks’ loss was to top-ranked Grand View Christian in a game that was tied at halftime. A pair of new teams enter the rankings at Nos. 7 and 8 as Dunkerton (11-0) and South O’Brien (9-4) join the party. Dunkerton is one of just four remaining undefeated teams in 1A, and had a big win over then-No. 6 Don Bosco last week.
Van Meter is still the top ranked team in Class 2A after improving to 12-0, including a win over then-3A No. 10 Winterset. Sioux Center falls from No. 2 to No. 6 following a pair of losses to LeMars and Sioux Falls Christian (SD), while the teams ranked third through sixth last week each move up a spot. Northeast, Goose Lake and Treynor enter the rankings at Nos. 9 and 10. Northeast’s only loss is a three-point loss to No. 2 Cascade, while Treynor is one of seven remaining undefeated teams in the class.
Despite a loss on Saturday, Oskaloosa remains the No. 1 team in Class 3A. The Indians lost in overtime to Dubuque Wahlert, which was enough to get the Golden Eagles into the rankings at No. 10, despite a 5-6 record. The Golden Eagles losses are all to 4A teams that have been ranked at some point this season (Cedar Rapids Kennedy, Dubuque Senior, Linn-Mar, Dubuque Hempstead, Cedar Falls, Iowa City West), and they’re now healthy and playing quality basketball. Mount Pleasant moves up a pair of spots to No. 2 and two-time defending champion Cedar Rapids Xavier also moves up two spots to No. 3. Norwalk and Glenwood round out the top five.
Iowa City West remains the top ranked team in Class 4A. The Trojans are the lone unbeaten team left in the class at 10-0, and have some impressive wins on their résumé. After the Trojans, hwoever, not a single team in the class is ranked in the same spot as last week. Johnston moves up from No. 3 to No. 2, and Sioux City East moves up a pair of spots to No. 3. Des Moines North, who was ranked second last week, falls to No. 6 following a loss to now-No. 5 Des Moines Hoover. Cedar Falls and West Des Moines Dowling, a pair of 8-3 teams who are playing quality basketball right now enter the rankings at Nos. 9 and 10, respectively.
