Tuesday Night Standouts
The basketball God’s weren’t kind on Tuesday night as it didn’t give us a good slate of games. There were more blowouts than I could count and not many noteworthy games to get out to so I was forced to scoreboard watch for the night. As I was scoreboard watching, these five players’ stats stood out to me for our standouts of the night.
Trent Dykema- Silver Creek
Silver Creek toppled Niwot on Tuesday night by a score of 77-43 and a big part of the Raptors success this year is their leading scorer, Trent Dykema. On the year he’s averaging 24 points and 8.4 rebounds a game and he kept up that momentum as he went off for a cool 25 points. With him scoring 25 he’s scored 20 or more points in 12 of the 16 games. He’s having himself a great senior year and attempting to end it with a bang. Get out and watch Silver Creek play if you get a chance.
Sam Masten-Rock Canyon
Sam is on the race to Mr. Basketball and with the numbers that he’s been putting up its hard to not see him as one of the favorites. In the Jaguars 72-50 blowout of Douglas County it was Sam who led all scorers. He put up 21 points and controlled the pace of the game as he often does. He scores, distributes and defends so well that it’s contagious and RC is riding the wave. They’re still undefeated on the year and have a tough game coming up this week against Chaparral that’ll be a real test for this talented squad.
Kaison Hammonds-Thunder ridge
Hammonds had a great junior year last year; he’s having an incredible senior year. He’s putting up 16.2 points a game to go along with 4.4 rebounds as well. On Tuesday, he scored 19 points with the time that he got to play and led his team to a convincing 80-38 win over Heritage. His Grizzlies are sitting at 17-1 on the year and have a tough stretch of games coming up with Highlands Ranch, Chaparral and Rock Canyon still on the schedule. Hammonds will use games like this to prepare for the ranked opponents they’re set to face and is showcasing why he’s one of the best players in the state.
Xavier Cooper-George Washington
There are blowouts and then there’s this. GW beat Kennedy 100-51 which makes it hard to find positive things from the game. This was a bit different as it was a game that transfer guard Xavier Cooper really needed. He did a bit of everything as he finished with 29 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists and showcased that he could take over a game if needed. GW has had a few losses this year as the team didn’t seem fully in sync but are starting to get things going and games like this from Cooper will have them as one of the most dangerous teams in the state come tournament time.
Xavier Johnson & Dawson Carper-Rampart
Rampart is sitting at 13-5 on the year and 5-2 in conference. This is a talented team as they have experience on their side with a very strong senior class and two of their top leading scorers on the team Xavier Johnson and Dawson Carper both had impressive showings in a rivalry game against Pine Creek in which the Rams won 71-51. Carper finished with a game high 26 points going an efficient 11/15 from the field. Johnson had a complete game as he had a double-double of 18 points and 12 rebounds as well as 3 assists. Rampart is a strong and a deep unit that’s been improving as the year goes along and strong games like this from two of their best players can go a long way.
