Tuesday Night Spotlight: District Battles
It’s Tuesday night around the state and that means another round of high school hoops. North Louisiana has some big district battles tonight. If tonight’s games are any indication of the types of contest that will occur for the rest of the season, then the playoff competition will be hot and heavy throughout the state.
#4 Bossier vs #1 Woodlawn: It does not get better on a Tuesday night than a #1 vs #4 match up to determine the district lead in 1-4A. Round one was a classic in which Woodlawn came from behind to win late at Bossier. This time, Bossier will travel to Woodlawn in hopes of leaving the gym in a first place tie. A Woodlawn win would all but assure them of a district title unless they fold down the rest of the district stretch. The point guard match up between juniors Jacoby “Doo-Doo” Decker and Tra’michael “T-Mike” Moton is must see. Add in Jalen Brooks, Dante Bell, and a host of other talented players and you have the ingredients for a great game. With Woodlawn becoming #1 earlier today, Bossier would cherish knocking them off their new pedestal.
#20 Airline vs #17 Southwood: A game that is not as high profile but has the same significance as Bossier-Woodlawn in 1-5A is Southwood versus Airline. This is the first district contest between the two teams as they look to take another step in securing a first round, home playoff game. Airline is undefeated (5-0) while the Cowboys are 4-1 after a stunning loss against a young, but tough, Captain Shreve team. The senior trio of Yancey Kelly, Maliq Smith, and Letreavin Black will try to hold off Trent Ivy and Airline’s cast of guards. A first place tie would definitely suit the Cowboys better before the second half of district starts. This game will be determined by whose guards make the biggest plays.
#1 Natchitoches Central vs #13 West Monroe: 5A’s number one Chiefs of Natchitoches will travel to West Monroe for a district tilt tonight. Natchitoches Central has won their first two district games by an average of 27 points. Brian White has played well since the loss to Bossier and will look to lead the Chiefs to victory in this district road game. Landon Powell will try to will his team to a district upset that would definitely vault his team further up the 5A standings. A win by West Monroe will also grant them a first place district tie which would be big for the team.
#7 Union Parish vs #5 Carroll: This 3A match up between Carroll and Union Parish, in Monroe, will be a heavyweight contest. Carroll has won their last five game including a hot start of 3-0 in district. Union Parish comes in 3-1 and will look for Jalen and Jordan Jones to use their offensive abilities to secure the road win. If Carroll can win at home, they will be in first place with a Friday match up against Wossman (who just jumped them in the rankings) looming. Carroll going 2-0 this week will move them up in the 3A rankings and show that they should be considered in the upper echelon of teams in class 3A. A Union Parish win would do the same thing and enhance their championship hopes.
