Trey Quartlebaum Talks Exceeding Expectations At Lawrence
PH: What would you describe as the best attribute of your game? In which ways, Trey, has your skill-set and the workload you put in over the summer been translatable to the season you guys are currently having?
TQ: The best attribute I have is my shooting. As a team, we do a very good of finding the open man and making the extra passes necessary. This helps us score, it certainly helps me get good shots off. Our willingness to play team basketball is instrumental in our production.
PH: How does your style align with the team’s method of attack? How would you describe the brand of basketball this Lawrence team enforces?
TQ: The way we play is to drive and attack and run sets. That allows a lot of kick out 3-pointers. We have a lot of freedom within our offensive system because our coach trusts us to make plays.
PH: Which win has been most memorable this season and why?
TQ: The most memorable win for me, was our first game (a 44-39 win over Topeka High back on Dec.1). We weren’t very deep and we really weren’t sure of what the rotation would look like. It was a very packed, loud environment because we played at their place on their home opener. It wasn’t a high-scoring game so it was mostly about who got more stops.
PH: Given all you guys lost during the off-season, did you get the idea that a lot of doubters were surfacing? And if so, what type of motivation did that spark within you guys, knowing people out there were saying you lost too much star power and that the roster from last season was thoroughly cleansed?
TQ: We heard A LOT of people start to doubt how good we’d be this year due to graduation, injuries, transfers, etc. We want to show people how good we can carry on this program’s winning tradition just as well as other teams in the past have.
PH: As one of the school’s top student-athletes, which class is your favorite at Lawrence HS and why?
TQ: My favorite class is Anatomy, because we do a lot of hands-on work and that’s really interesting to me. I actually had my best grade for my core classes in Anatomy.
