Meeting between two East Valley teams looking to rebound from losing streaks for the 2nd half of the season. The Jaguars are led by Seniors Aaron Sayco ( 6’1” 14ppg), Chris Rockers (6’3” 11.9ppg) and point guard Alex Medellin (10ppg).
The Jaguars started the game in a 2-3 zone while the Hawks played man. The Jags were able to hit a few 3’s (Sayco-2) and a few other opportunistic buckets to take a 14-10 lead at the end of one. The second quarter was a test of wills as both teams refused to deviate from the game plan. It would’ve been a tie score at the half but a full court heave from Desert Ridge’s Buck Eagleburger gave the jags a 30-27 lead.
The 3rd frame saw both teams loosen up a bit. I was extremely impressed by the Jaguars ball movement as the ball moved quickly from side to side as they passed up good shots to get great ones for a 45-40 lead. In the 4th the intensity picked up for both teams. The Hawks specifically picked up their defense using a full court press and tough half court man-to-man to pressure the Jags. The game came down to the final shot as Justin Stidhum’s floater in the middle of the lane rimmed out and the Jaguars held on to win a nail biter 52-51.
Best PG: Alex Medellin (Desert Ridge)- tough physical guard who runs the show for the Jags. Uses his body well to finish against contact and shield defenders from the ball.
Best Post: Carter Coray (Highland)- The 6’7” Center plays with a lot of poise and has good fundamentals.
Most Athletic: Chris Rocker (Desert Ridge)- announced as the “man in the middle” by the home announcer, Rocker is only a center by default as he’s the Jaguars tallest player in the starting lineup at 6’3. He actually NEVER posts up and instead plays the wing and does a great job driving to the basket.
Speedy Gonzalez: Justin Stidhum (Highland)- by far the quickest player on the floor. The Hawks PG has a nice handle and utilizes a nice floater to finish in the lane.
Best Name/Shooter: Buck Eagleburger (Desert Ridge)- the 5’11” Junior has great form and a quick release. Had the highlight of the night with the aforementioned full court buzzer beater at halftime. Might also have the most all-American name I’ve ever heard!
Toughness: Connor Peterson (Highland)- listed at 6’2” 200lbs plays tough D and likes to be physical whenever possible. Type of player that will either win the game or win the fight in the parking lot afterward.
6th man/Most Potential: Brennan Armijo (6’4” So. Desert Ridge)- has really improved his toughness and athleticism since I last saw him over the summer. Rebounds the ball with arms extended and gets above the rim. Did a good job on the offensive glass for the Jags.
Best Motor: Trenton “TJ” Walker (Highland)-good athlete who goes transitions end-to-end very quickly for the Hawks.
Pure Scorer: Aaron Sayco (Desert Ridge)- the Jaguars leading scorer doesn’t do anything exceptionally well but manages to get buckets throughout the game on open jumpers and tough drives.
Best Hair/shoes: Brody Chapman (Highland)- rocking the dirty blonde curls with the aqua Kyrie 2’s to match the Hawks black/aqua blue jersey color scheme.
