SW Metro Boys Athlete of the Week: Caleb Druvenga
Shakopee basketball fans know how to support their guys.
Exhibit A: this week’s SW Metro Boys Athlete of the Week, Caleb Druvenga.
The sophomore has had an electrifying first half of the season for the Sabers, averaging 17.7 ppg alongside fellow classmate Charles Katona (19.6 ppg). Shakopee is 7-9, already three wins better than all of last season, thanks in large part to Druvenga’s two SW Metro Boys Athlete of the Week wins.
“The season’s going good, we’ve improved a lot from last year,” Caleb told NHR. “I would say the biggest highlight so far was our game against Apple Valley, even though we lost by 8 it was still a fun game to be a part of.”
The Sabers have been a model of consistency over the years under Bruce Kugath, but after a few stellar classes, the program underwent a youth movement last season, and though there have been bumps in the road, it’s easy to see Shakopee is improving steadily against tough teams in the South Suburban Conference. Druvenga is a key cog in that machine.
”Our team goal is to keep improving and win while my goal is to help my team as much as I can with my passing or shooting or my defense. 7 of our 9 losses have been 1 possession games with a couple minutes left and we’re working on closing games,” Caleb added.
It’s still quite early in the promising sophomore’s career, so he has ample time to catch eyes of coaches. “So far I haven’t heard a lot from recruiters, but I’m looking to change that.”
Meanwhile, the name of the game is improvement for Druvenga and the Shakopee Sabers.
