The Raiders have won 5 of their last 6 and receive their scoring punch from Seniors Ivan Galindo (6’0” 16.1ppg) and CJ Atherton (6’1” 10.8ppg). Mike Anderson leads the charge for the Wolves (6’0” Sr. 9.8ppg) who have traded wins and losses over their last four games.
Chandler jumped out to a 27-8 first quarter lead using their superior athleticism against Cibola’s 2-3 zone. The 2nd quarter saw Multiple dunks for the Wolves (Anderson and Jacquez Barrow ). As they were able to convert off Raider turnovers for a 44-19 halftime score.
The Raiders came out in a 1-3-1 to start the 3rd but the Wolves exhibited great patience and worked the ball around to get good shots and extend their lead 63-25. The Wolves emptied their bench for the entirety of the 4th as they forced a running clock being up over 30 points. Larry Lopez made the most of his opportunity scoring a two 3’s, a transition layup, and a tip-in put back off a missed shot. Was also impressed with post Glenn Baxter (Cibola). The 6’3” lefty post plays with a consistent demeanor and showed good fundamental play. Ultimately the Wolves came away with a 79-39 win!
Killer Crossover: Mike Anderson (Chandler)- uses the move frequently to get past his defender to create offensive opportunities for himself or to dish to teammates.
Toughness: CJ Atherton (Cibola)-the 6’1” Senior captain is not a post player but often plays with his back to the basket in the high post and on the block based on sheer will and not size.
Inside Man: Elijah Butts (Chandler)- at 6’3” 206lbs. he’s already built like a professional athlete. Moves more like a guard than a traditional big even with his size and finishes well off his teammates assists.
Best Hair: Derek Barnes (Cibola)- blonde mohawk look taken directly from Odell Beckham.
Leadership: Ryan Curtis-Sanchez (Cibola)- could’ve competed for the best hair award with his long blonde locks tied up in a bun but I was really impressed with his leadership. He’s the team captain and showed nice form on his shot as well as an ability to finish inside at 5’11”
Fab Frosh: Carson Kelly (Chandler) saw significant meaningful minutes at the guard position. Had the best assist of the evening darting into the lane off the dribble to deliver a dime to Jarick Caldwell for the finish. The 6’3” 210lb. senior showed some pretty nice moves of his own to finish in the paint
Best Name: Stone Braveheart (Cibola)- not sure there’s a stronger name in America. The long armed 6’3” Sophomore did a good job on the glass but needs to work on finishing.
