Safford Bulldogs travel to Queen Creek to take on the American Leadership Academy.6’2’ Sophomore Collin Thompson leads Safford (14.6ppg) followed by Juniors Andrew Smith (6ft. 12.9ppg) and Drew Cochran (6’3” 11.7ppg). The Patriots are led by 6’3” Jr. Stone Smith (13.6ppg), 6’7 Sr. Tanner McLahlan (12.4ppg. DNP Visa/eligibility issue) and 6’2” Sr. Spencer Tyler (11.6ppg)
The Patriots opened up a 16-5 lead in the first quarter as they outran the Bulldogs sprinting up the court in transition. In the 2nd quarter the Patriots continued to wear Safford down with their depth with all 13 active players receiving minutes. They were able to extend their advantage 35-18.
In the 3rd The Patriots used a 2-3 zone to provide a different look. Safford played tough defense but were unable to chip away ending the 3rd down 47-29. The final quarter saw the Patriots continue to dominate while clearing the bench and holding their lead. They finished the game 60-38!
Best Prospect: Devon Brooke (ALA)- the 6’7” sophomore is listed as a G/PG which is quite intriguing by itself. Very fluid athlete who has a nice dribble pull up game. Was the clear leader on the floor for his team.
Bright Future: Jedrigue Chavez (Safford)- long and athletic. Changes direction well and makes good decisions in the lane. Exciting prospect as Chavez is only a freshman.
Best Post(s): Dyson Lighthall (Patriots) & Drew Cochran (Safford)- 6’6” Lighthall is a big body “space eater” inside who seals defenders on his back to get easy baskets inside. Cochran, at 6’3” is a bit shorter and is more active all over the court. His physical build reminds me of the great Kevin McHale (broad chest, long arms). Move surprisingly well for his size and is a capable passer.
Best Shooter: AJ Camarena (Safford)-great form and quick release. Nothing but net on his made attempts.
Safety Award: Stratton Baldwin (Safford)- many of today’s players use mouthpieces but I’ve never seen one play an entire game (until today) with their mouthpiece hanging mostly outside of their mouth.
Bounce: Dylan Wallace (Patriots)- The 6’6” Sr. had everyone on their feet with a breakaway dunk in the 3rd quarter.
