Standouts: Calvary Christian vs. Tampa Prep
Despite prior injuries to sophomore point guards Jaden Gray and Isaac Ward, Tampa Prep did enough in the second half to defeat Class 4A-District 4 rival Calvary Christian 63-45 on Tuesday night.
The Terrapins (8-5) were led by seniors Trey Sibert (20 points) and Christian Schach (18 points). For visiting Calvary Christian (7-6), the Warriors earned an 18-point night from senior Austin Meloche.
Here are the standouts from the district clash.
Trey Sibert (Tampa Prep)
A gritty and tough senior forward, Trey Sibert worked hard for all of his game-high 20 points in this one. The 6’5″ big man also had 12 rebounds and three blocks. It was a forgettable night for Sibert at the free throw line, but he made up for it with his physicality down low and mentality to never give up on a play.
Austin Meloche (Calvary Christian)
There is a big difference in junior Austin Meloche and senior Austin Meloche. The 2018 guard is the vocal leader of this new-look Calvary Christian group. A season ago, he played his part as a spot-up shooter. He’s more than that now and he proved it with 18 points which included a few crafty lay-ins.
Christian Schach (Tampa Prep)
A determined outside shooter, Christian Schach came out firing in the opening quarter with 10 of his team’s 14 points. He finished with 18 points, pacing his offense and setting up others for shots. The senior guard is as smart as they come. At 6’3″, he is physical enough to win most battles on both sides of the ball.
Josh Berenbaum (Calvary Christian)
Only a sophomore, Josh Berenbaum didn’t back down from a hard matchup against Sibert. The 2020 forward scored 14 points which included 10 in the second half. He took advantage of some space inside, but for the most part, he had to battle to find openings.
Jaren Phillips (Tampa Prep)
Serving as the defunct point guard with Gray and Ward inactive, Jaren Phillips created time and time again for his group. He had 13 points, 11 rebounds, five assists, two blocks and two steals in a very enjoyable performance. The 6’5″ junior guard/forward has a bright basketball IQ and when he finds a rhythm, he’s hard to contain.
Jared Walker (Tampa Prep)
Coming off the bench, junior forward Jared Walker provided a true spark for his side. He recorded seven points, all coming in the second half. At 6’5″, Walker is best served as an outside shooter. He needs to add some muscle to become a true rebounding threat, but for now, he is a nice role player for Tampa Prep.
