Shaker, Garfield Heights, St. Edward all in action at Dunk 4 Diabetes
The place to be Jan. 28 for all hoop heads in the Cleveland area will be University Heights and the DeCarlo Varsity Center on the campus of John Carroll University where the Dunk 4 Diabetes event will take place.
The games start at 11 a.m. when Gilmour takes on Lake Catholic and ends with the nightcap at 8 p.m.
Here’s a little intel on the matchups:
Gilmour v. Lake Catholic, 11 a.m.
I’ve yet to see Lake Catholic, which is ranked No. 11 in the most recent Cleveland.com rankings.
Gilmour features a 6’6” Dechlan Kirincic (2018) a bruising forward who has range on his jumper and point guard CJ Charleston (2019) an athletic 5’9” point guard with plenty of bounce, who was third-team All-Ohio Division IV in football this past fall.
Benedictine vs. Revere, 12:30 p.m.
Revere feature Northwestern recruit Pete Nance, a 6’9” wonder with a total game whose dad and brother have both played at a high level in the NBA.
Revere also features another talented big man in Hunter Drenth, who can play inside and outside.
Benedictine has played a brutal schedule but hung with opponents like St. Vincent-St. Mary and Garfield Heights before falling short.
Villa Angela-St. Joseph vs. Akron Hoban, 2 p.m.
The Vikings are led by their do-it-all senior point guard Gene Higgins who can go off for 30 with ease.
Cornerstone Christian vs. Brush, 3:30 p.m.
Might be the best game on the schedule. Brush features of a trio of Division I prospects in John Hugley, Andre Harris and D.J. Dial while Cornerstone Christian is led by scoring machine Michael Bothwell and recently beat Garfield Heights.
Shaker Heights vs. Pickerington North, 5 p.m.
Dale Bonner (2018) is coming off a 26-point game in a win over Brush. Teammate Christian Guess went for 22. Guess will be tested by Pickering North’s Jerome Hunter, a 6’6” who is headed to Indiana.
St. Edward vs. Cleveland Heights, 6:30 p.m.
This is a statement game for Cleveland Heights which has been on roll as of late behind the play of guards Yahel Hill and Javon Roberts and big man Tyreke Smith.
St. Edward is led by a core of talented sophomores, which includes Grant Huffman and Devontae Blanton.
Garfield Heights vs. Kennedy Catholic (PA.), 8 p.m.
Garfield Height was once ranked amongst the top 25 teams in the country, now the Bulldogs are on a three-game losing skid.
It will be interesting to see how Garfield’s Alonzo Gaffney (2019), one of the best big men in Ohio, plays against Kennedy’s Oscar Tshiebwe (2019), a 6’10” junior.
