Recruiting Report: Perry Cowan (2019)
DePaul Prep 2019 shooting guard Perry Cowan is a smooth shooting guard that has a quality junior year to date. He has been posting consistent numbers leading his team. His jump shot is starting to become steadier especially from mid-range. Working out of the post is an underrated part of his game that when he goes to is pretty effective. Overall he is a rangy shooting guard with upside being able to score at multiple levels. Cowan has added strength in his upper body since we saw him in July.
He chatted with PrepHoopsIllinois about his junior campaign.
“It is going pretty good. I see the game slowing down and am creating for myself and others. I was used to rushing a lot. Now I am just taking my time and making shots. Also getting my teammates.”
Being an upperclassmen with two years of starting experience has helped the talented wing.
“I got stronger which has helped a lot. I have a lot of experience under my belt. There is nothing that I haven’t seen the last two years and that has prepared me for now. I can teach the younger guys to take your time and stay the course.”
Where has he improved the most skill wise?
“My ball handling and three point shooting. Getting to the basket. I am finishing with my left hand better.”
Cowan updated us on his recruitment.
“There are a couple schools still calling me. Stanford started recruiting me. Drake has offered me. I went to a DePaul game. Tulsa keeps in touch with me. Miami (OH).”
DePaul is a school that he went to for a visit this season.
“I went to the game versus Northwestern. I liked it a lot. The arena is really nice. They look to get their players better and are big on character development. They like my character and leadership on and off the court. They look at that more than your skill set.”
Drake has also been making a serious run at his services. He visited there in the fall.
“I liked it a lot. I like the coaching staff. They run the ball. I could see myself playing there.”
Stanford he hasn’t been able to check out yet, but they are intriguing to him.
“The academics and they like to get their players better. It is a team atmosphere.”
Any future visits planned?
“Maybe not until the spring. I will talk to some more coaches and get some visits lined up for the spring time. Right before or during AAU.”
Cowan runs with the Illinois Wolves on the travel team circuit and is the top shooting guard prospect in the 2019 class.
