Recruiting Report: Nate Seelye (2018)
A senior who has shown the state of Minnesota what he is capable of as a consistent scorer is Nate Seelye from Grand Rapids. At 6-foot-3 Seelye has led the GR to a 9-4 start while scoring 23 points a contest and NHR talked to Nate about his year and recruiting to date.
Grand Rapids dropped a game over the weekend to Anoka but it was only their fourth loss of the year as the Thunderhawks have defeated Big Lake and Pequot Lakes among others. Seelye has led the way along with senior big Blake Smith.
“Things are going well with the team and me also,” Nate said. “One thing I think I’ve improved in is handling pressure as a ball handler and also getting to the hoop and finishing more than I used to.”
Section 7AAA looks wide open and in most years that means Grand Rapids is going to state. Ten times since the turn of the century Grand Rapids has went to state but this year Hibbing, Princeton, Cloquet, and Duluth Denfeld all have good years going along with Grand Rapids.
“Our team has eight seniors but only three of us had played varsity minutes in previous years,” Nate said. “We also got a great junior class that helps contribute to the team. Also, no matter what five guys are in, we can all run the floor and that’s when we’re at our best, when we get stops and get out in transition.”
So what is this GR team capable of? And what does Nate hope to accomplish the rest of the season?
“An individual goal of mine is to get my 1,000 career points this year and for our team to get back to the state tournament and not be satisfied with getting there like we did last year and actually win a game or three.”
Nate recently had games of 37 points and 39 points in back to back nights. Schools are in contact but two MIAC schools seem to be after Nate the hardest.
“Concordia Moorhead and Augsburg, they have been in contact the most and I went on a college visit to Augsburg in the beginning of the school year,” Nate said.
