Recruiting Report: Jon Martens (2018)
Six-foot-3 forward Jon Martens of Minnetonka is one of the tougher seniors in Minnesota and his willingness to battle at a high level is what makes him who he is.
The Skippers are 7-2 on the season and currently on a five game winning streak. Tonka just went 2-0 in the Owatonna holiday event winning a pair of close games.
“Things for my team are going pretty good,” Martens said. “Something feels different about this year than last year, we would like to be 9-0 right now but we learned a lot from our two losses.”
Tonka lost to Farmington by a basket and lose to Park Center by a dozen. Tonka has Chanhassen and STMA coming up this week followed by a huge game with Eden Prairie next week.
“With our three seniors leaving last year I had to become one of the leaders on the team, also I had to become more of a scorer,” Martens said.
Jon is the third leading scorer for Tonka giving his team 11-12 points a night to take some pressure of Jalen Dearring and Cameron Steele.
“We have a lot of low key talent coming back from last year,” Martens said. “We feel like a lot of teams/people sleep on us but we like it, it gives us more motivation. One of our goals is to make it to state this year we feel like we have a good chance.”
Tonka is in a loaded Section 2AAAA along with Edina, Eden Prairie, Chaska, and Prior Lake and all five of these teams are ranked or have been ranked. Not to mention Shakopee is improved and Jefferson and Chanhassen each have talent on their roster.
Martens has confidence in his team and in himself. He is one of the best defenders in the state of Minnesota and that is why one school is contacting him regularly while others are starting to get in touch.
“Mayville State has been talking to me heavy but other than that I’ve just been getting mail, nothing serious yet.”
