Recruiting Report: Cal Wright (2018)
The Mora Mustangs are currently 7-3 and guard Cal Wright is leading not only his team in scoring, but he’s proven to be one of the state’s top scorers!
“The season is going well this year,” Wright said. “Individually, I’m averaging 35 points a game and playing pretty well!
“I think the biggest improvement to my game is my ability to drive to the basket. It’s a lot easier for me to get to the rim now, and I’m at the point where if the defense doesn’t step up, I’ll score, and if they do, I’ll give my teammate an easy shot.”
Wright has scored on 46 percent of his 20 shots a game this year and 80 plus percent of his foul shots. With wins over Barnesville, Braham, Foley, Pierz, and others, it’s been a really nice year for Mora so far.
“I expect us to be pretty solid this year,” Wright said. “We have a good amount of returning players and we’ve had a few guys really step up this year. We’re hardly ever the biggest team on the court, but everyone is always working hard and giving 100 percent.”
As a player Wright hopes to hit the 2K mark and he’s hoping Mora can make a March wrong. Section 6AA is a monster to get through, teams like St. Cloud Cathedral, Melrose, Annandale, Holdingford, Eden Valley-Watkins, Albany, and so many others. Out of 16 teams, 13 of the 6AA teams have winning records.
“My individual goal is to reach 2,000 points this year,” Cal said. “As a team, we’ve set the standards pretty high for ourselves. I think everyone expects us to be above .500 for sure. If we continue to play well, we have a chance to go deep in the playoffs this year.”
Cal has recently made his college commitment to a MIAC program.
“Regarding college, I actually just recently committed to Concordia Moorhead to play basketball.”
