Recruiting Report: Byron Bynum (2018)
Blaine guard Byron Bynum Jr is a player you saw in the all star football game and now he is handling the ball for a Bengals squad that is currently 6-3.
“Currently we are 6-3,” Bynum told Prep Hoops. “We’ve had three section losses that should be wins due to lack of execution throughout games. We have a very solid team but just need to fix the small things and details to make us a lot better than we already are.”
Losing to Cambridge, Forest Lake, and Coon Rapids has set Blaine back some in the sectional race but they have put together six wins.
“This year I’m leading a lot more with the ball always in my hands and teammates looking for me to make plays,” Byron said. “And get other opens shots a lot more. Jumper becoming a lot better than it has been.”
The senior class at Blaine is solid and they expect to have a strong year. Ray Mitchell’s off-season was excellent and at 20 points game he’s really taken his game to another level. Sam Browne and Jack Kaul are scoring about ten a game as is Deven Nebo.
“I’ve been a 4 year varsity player Sam Browne and Jason Kaul have been on the team the last few years and other starters Ray Mitchell and Deven Nebo are first year Varsity players,” Bynum said. “We are all very experienced and know how the game is played.”
Byron does not need to score much for his team so handling the ball, moving the ball, and defending are important. Byron can score but he has several teammates who have that ability as well.
“My goal is to lead the team offensively and defensively, take care of the ball, and get others very good shots playmaking and communicating. Obviously the team goal is to get to the state tournament but take one game at a time to every possible win.”
Byron’s football ability has led to scholarship opportunity at several programs.
“Football wise I have five Division two offers and am talking to a few D1 schools for preferred walk-on offers and basketball just waiting and seeing if anything pops up,” said the Blaine guard.
