Recruiting Report: Austin Carter (2018)
Chanhassen guard Austin Carter is a player that has put in a ton of work to be the player he is, and the gradual improvement has led to a big senior year so far.
“I think our team has taken some huge steps early in our season,” Austin said. “We barely lost to East Ridge our first game and same with New Prague. We won the Hibbing Tournament (beating Osseo, Andover, and Cambridge) which really showed what we are capable of by beating Osseo in our first game then beating Andover to go to the championship.
“I also think I’m doing better as a player than I did last year.”
There is no doubt about that. Austin has been in double figures every game but one (had nine versus Shakopee) and he’s scoring 13 a contest for his team.
“I think this year I’ve been taking lifting more seriously than I did last year making me more stronger,” Carter stated. “Which is something I’ve been working on because I’m not the strongest guy on the court.
“And I’ve been working more on driving to the basket making more of a threat than just the three.”
But there is no doubt that Carter can stroke from deep. He’s done it versus some of the best too going for 14 against both EP and Tonka plus he had a dozen last night against Edina.
As you’ve read through this article so far you’ve seen a lot of quality opponents so far but Chanhassen has scheduled that way because they are in Section 2AAAA which top to bottom is the toughest section in the state.
“I think we have a lot of talented basketball players on our team. We have Chris Wandling who started last year and came off the bench two years ago for varsity. We have Ryder Hutton who played varsity last year with me. We also have a lot of young talent on our team.
“Regan Tollefon has been huge for us because we don’t have a lot of height on our team. Carson Hollowaty is a very good guard for us, he can dribble wherever he wants and he can shoot anywhere he wants.
“I think we will be really good this year if we can just figure out how to play together better. We need to distribute the ball because we have a lot of shooters on our team we just need to find the open man and not force anything.”
When conference play begins in the Metro West will be battle tested and ready. Based on results so far this year Chaska is the favorite, Richfield is struggling, and then there are eight teams in the middle ready to fight for the top spot with the Hawks.
“My goal is to be all conference and help our team in any way possible to win games,” Wandling said. “Our team goals, I want to be #1 in our conference and to go further in the playoffs.”
With a work ethic, a jumper, and a pattern of improvement Austin Carter is looking at several MIAC programs.
“I’ve talked to Hamline, Augsburg, Gustavus, Saint Mary’s, and Wartburg. I’ve visited all the schools except for Wartburg.”
