Prospect Spotlight: Maurice Barnett (2018)
Class of 2018, 6’5 wing man Maurice Barnett is primed to have a stellar senior year. I look forward to watching him grow this season.
The shooting guard (SG), also known as the two or off guard, is one of the five positions in a regulation basketball game. A shooting guard’s main objective is to score points for his team. Some teams ask their shooting guards to bring up the ball as well; these players are known colloquially as combo guards.
Typically, shooting guards are taller than point guards. Height at the position varies; many bigger shooting guards also play small forward. Shooting guards should be good ball handlers and be able to pass reasonably well, though passing is not their main priority. Since good shooting guards may attract double-teams, they are frequently the team’s back-up ball handlers to the point guard and typically get a fair number of assists.
Maurice Barnett – Franklin
Barnett does everything for the Quakers, from scoring to guarding the opposing post players. He has an extreme work ethic and can rebound at a high level. He attacks the hoop hard every time, looking to get poster finishes at the rim. He’s one of the main reasons the Quakers are getting wins this season, averaging 20.7 points per game.
He is a thick-bodied wing player who can really shoot the basketball from 3-point range. He uses his strength to his advantage to keep defenders away from the dribble. He is a physical kid who possesses a very nice touch from distance. A very active wing player who plays with a high motor and good athleticism. He has a versatile skill set and knock down shooting range from beyond the 3-point line. He was very good at making transition 3-pointers off the catch. Very impressive.
