Prospect Spotlight: 2018 Devin Garcia
When you think of Dominguez (Compton) resurgence these days the first name that probably comes to mind is Cal State Fullerton signee Wayne Arnold—and rightfully so. However, there are a number of other standouts on this squad including senior Brenton Woods Jr. , junior Sean Harlston, and the recently added Gary Williams. However, the focus of this particular story is the emergence of senior Devin Garcia.
Garcia is a 6-foot-4 senior who prior to this season was mostly known as an exceptional track athlete for the Dons, as he is one of the better track athletes in the Compton/Long Beach area. Due to his work ethic and natural talent, his basketball acumen is turning the corner as well.
“We work hard as a team and we push each other in practice to raise the level of our games to meet the coaches expectations,” explains Garcia.
Garcia is a much-improved wing-type that is one of Dons’ unsung heroes.Garcia is a wiry athletic wing-type who oozes athleticism and his motor is non-stop. He excels in transition where he can slash his way to the rim and he is quite the nifty finisher as well. He has the length, quickness, and bounce to go over the top of the defense or the body control to maneuver around defenders.
Despite his scoring prowess there are areas that would serve him well if he wants to take his game to another level. As mentioned before, Garcia has slight frame that needs to bulk up to increase his ability to finish through contact. In addition, he does show the ability to knock in jump shots but his shot needs to get more consistent to keep his slashing style available.
Whether Garcia chooses to further his athletic career in the area of track and field or basketball remains to be seen. At this stage he is focused in helping his team win a CIF Championship and with the tools he has at his disposal, that potential accomplishment is real.
“Our coaches stress team work, and we have the pieces to make our goals come a reality,” notes Garcia.
