Northeast Ohio round-up: Shaker Heights’ Christian Guess (2018) to miss showdown with St. Edward
The January 7 showdown between No. 2-ranked Lakewood St. Edward and No. 4 ranked Shaker Heights lost a little of its sizzle as Shaker Heights’ sensational wing Christian Guess will miss the game.
Guess, a 6’6’ senior, received a pair of technical fouls in the Red Raiders’ 73-68 win on the road on Jan. 5 against Elyria, the second coming late in the game when he allegedly hung on the rim after a breakaway dunk, according to a video of the play.
According to Ohio High School Athletic Association regulations, a player must sit the next two games after receiving two or more technical fouls in a game.
Guess, who is the No. 22 ranked player in the state according to Prep Hoops rankings, scored 57 points in a game earlier this year. Although he’s been offered by several mid-majors, his recruiting battle has taken an upswing as West Virginia has become interested.
Guess scored 20 in the win over Elyria. Dale Bonner, the No. 46-ranked player in the state, scored 21 to lead Shaker. Shaker is slated to play St. Edward as part of the Play by Play Classic at Baldwin Wallace University in Berea and then highly-rated Solon on Jan. 9.
St. Edward, for its part, improved to 9-2 with a win over No. 9-ranked St. Vincent-St. Mary.
Grant Huffman (2019), a 6’3” guard ranked No. 6 by Prep Hoops, came off the bench to score 11 points to lead the Eagles to the win. Huffman was making his return to action after suffering an ankle injury in the Eagles’ season-opening win.
Freshman Malaki Branham scored 11 points and grabbed nine rebounds while junior point guard Chris Painter scored 12 for St. V.

Lorain High improved to 7-1 and 3-0 in the Lake Erie League with a 67-64 come-from-behind road win against Maple Heights.
