Killdeer (8-6) is coming off of an 87-60 home loss to Stanley, the No. 1-ranked team in the state. Killdeer will be a dangerous team to watch out for come tournament time in North Dakota Class B Region 7 boys hoops.
They have the length and defensive focus to cause a lot of teams problems at regionals. They have only allowed opponents to top 65 points three times this season. Two of those teams are ranked in the state’s top 10 poll (Stanley, New Town). There are no Region 7 teams ranked in the Top 10 poll.
Killdeer has also won the games they were supposed to with their strong defense only allowing 53.9 points per game this season. They’ve only lost to one team with a losing record this year (Heart River, 6-9 overall).
The key cogs for this team are Daylon Danks, Dawson Schmeling, Garrett LeMieux, and Alex Sadowsky. Danks is a 5-10 sophomore guard who can shoot it from the outside when given space.
Schmeling and LeMieux are both tall senior slashers. Schmeling, 6-3, usually scores by cutting to the basket and posting up.
LeMieux, 6-5, is a slasher who can also put the ball on the floor and beat defenders with the dribble. He has also thrown down an in-game dunk this season. Sadowsky, 6-4, is the most well-rounded player on Killdeer’s roster. He can shoot the 3, post-up and is one of the team’s best passers.
Killdeer’s struggles have been on offense this year. They have failed to top 60 points in 57 percent of their games this year. If they can keep their defensive intensity and figure out a way to boost their scoring from 57.3 points they’ll have a chance to make some noise late in the year. Killdeer’s next game is at Hazen Friday night.
Senior Leaders Speak
Garrett LeMieux, 6-5 senior forward
Q: How do you keep improving?
A: We’re always trying to improve whatever we do. We are so competitive that it’s like we’re not quite where we want to be ever.
Q: What’s the key to your defense?
A: Pressure, hard work. Obviously, defense is the best offense with our game because we are so lanky. It seems like the better defense we play it kind of translates to our offense.
Alex Sadowsky 6-4 senior forward
Q: How do you improve?
A: We all want to push each other. I’d say something we need to improve on is we are a little bit stagnant on offense sometimes – get the flow going more constantly.
Q: How do you improve your defense?
A: We just have to get the motivation to follow through with the solid defense that we can play, if we want to play it.
Q: What have you enjoyed this season?
A: I’ve liked how the team is really starting to come together. It’s not just Garrett and Dawson as a show. It’s the whole team contributing and once we figure out how to do that every single game I think we’ll be close to unstoppable.
