*Heart River @ Dickinson Trinity
*Glen Ullin-Hebron @ Killdeer
*Region 7 games
Heart River @ Dickinson Trinity – Heart River has been playing well in Region 7 play. They’re 4-1 right now and almost stole a win against Beulah on the road to start Region 7 play. They’ve figured out a way to play and they’re good at winning close games. Their big three of Lane Chruszch, Cauy Shypkoski, and Jayden Krivoruchka are dangerous.
Trinity has a misleading 5-5 record and they proved that by stomping New England by 39 points on Tuesday. How bad does Trinity want it? That’s going to be the question that answers this game. Trinity didn’t compete at a high desire level when they lost four consecutive to Thompson, Four Winds-Minnewaukan, Our Redeemer’s and Oak Grove.
Some weaknesses were exposed during that run of games against the state’s Class B powerhouse teams. Noah Sickler, Dickinson Trinity senior, has positioned himself as the best defender in the region. Whoever wins this game will have a strong shot at earning a first-round region tournament bye.
Dickinson Trinity – Noah Sickler is a strong defender and great slasher. Jacob Kubas is a big body who can take over the game down low. If Alec Sickler wins the PG matchup Trinity has a good shot at winning.
Heart River – Lane Chruszch is Mr. Hustle and Mr. Pest. If there’s a loose ball, he’s on it. Whoever is the primary ball-handler for Heart River’s opponent has to be ready for constantly being full-court pressured. Cauy Shypkoski can get it done in the post. Jayden Krivoruchka is a forward with nice size who likes to shoot the 3-ball. If he’s on it makes Heart River tougher to defend.
Glen Ullin-Hebron @ Killdeer
Killdeer is off to a 5-3 start with wins over Mott-Regent and Bowman County in Region 7 play. The senior tandem of Alex Sadowsky and Garrett LeMieux seem to be working. Killdeer is still short depth wise but they’ve got two all-region type seniors, which gives them a chance against most teams in the region.
Glen Ullin-Hebron is a young team trying to figure out how to win. They are 2-5 overall and recently lost to Heart River by 3 points in double overtime. Glen Ullin-Hebron doesn’t have a single senior on their roster this season.
Killdeer — Alex Sadowsky is a big strong senior forward for Killdeer who can shoot it from the outside and score in the post.
Flasher at New England
This is an interesting non-regional matchup. New England (3-3) is playing .500 basketball despite losing 6-foot-6 senior Cody Holt to graduation. New England hasn’t proven anything this year and their 85-45 lost to Region 7 power Dickinson Trinity suggests they have a lot of work to do.
Flasher (2-7) has played a tough schedule. Flasher faced a tough early season slate of Garrison, Turtle Lake-Mercer/McClusky, Shiloh, Hettinger-Scranton, Mott-Regent, and Solen. Both of Flasher’s wins (63-66 W vs. TLMM; 48-32 W vs. Underwood) are against teams playing .500 or better this season.
New England hasn’t beaten a team with a .500 or winning record this season. Two of New England’s wins were against teams who haven’t won a game this year (Center-Stanton and Grant County).
Flasher is more battle-tested but New England has home court advantage.
New England – Denit Sorenson, a physical undersized forward
New Salem-Almont @ Mott-Regent
Mott-Regent enters the game at 5-4. They are coming off a 21-point home loss to Killdeer. Mott-Regent will be trying to bounce back. New Salem-Almont is 3-6 on the year with no impressive wins.
Mott-Regent will be trying to use this game to get some positive momentum. They are 1-3 in their last four games and they’ll need positive reinforcement before their big non-regional game with Solen on Saturday.
Mott-Regent – Hunter Crist, an athletic wing player who can play inside out.
