Names you need to know: Class of 2020
Yeah, yeah, the seniors and juniors get a lot of the press. But there are some talented sophomores in the state, many with large roles on good teams. Here are 12 names in the class of 2020:
Micah Garrett, West Linn
Earlier this month, West Linn narrowly beat TRL rival Lake Oswego, 86-84. It was a dramatic win and it was Micah Garrett who led the Lions with 25 points. The 6-foot-3 guard is a Division I player with a high ceiling.
Bryson Crockett, West Linn
Another 6-foot-3 West Linn guard, Crockett is a transfer from Clackamas. Both he and Garrett are coming into their own and becoming key contributors on, arguably, one of the top 5 teams in the state.
David Gonzales, Silverton
Coach Jamie McCarty likes that Gonzales is a complete point guard in that he can shoot the three, finish in the paint and find shooters. “His ball-handling skills and his ability to get to the rim are unmatched,” McCarty said.
Jesse White, Barlow
Barlow has been good this season. Maybe even surprisingly good. Although they lost close games at Oregon City and Clackamas by the same score, 71-65, recently, they beat Central Catholic on Friday. to improve to 5-2 in the Mt. Hood Conference. White has been their star point guard.
Kobe Withers, Sprague
Withers isn’t an exceptional scorer, but he doesn’t need to be. He’s an uber reliable point guard for a good Sprague team.
Jayden Vranes, Crater
Small and slight, the 5-foot-10 point guard is running the point for Crater, among 5A’s best. The lefty handles the ball well, scores in the paint when needed and can shoot. He shares the backcourt with his brother, senior Mason Vranes.
Dakota Reber, Wilsonville
A 6-foot-5 post, Reber is a starter on a strong Wilsonville team. He’s averaging 1.2 blocks per game.
Malik Kelley, Roosevelt
Kelley is a sturdy 6-foot-3 starting forward for Roosevelt. He’s a strong defender and rebounder. Does not look like a sophomore when he’s battling for boards with seniors.
Deray Seamster, Central Catholic
Seamster played a bit for the Rams last year, but is starting this year. Senior Isaac Amaral-Artharee scores the bulk of Central Catholic’s points, but Seamster is a key piece. Sophomore Isiah Amato, an athletic wing, also starts for the Rams.
Ethan Abrahmson, Gresham
Gresham is 2-5 in the Mt. Hood this year, which might not seem like much, but considering their last conference win came in 2014, it’s a strong showing for the Gophers. Abrahmson, a 6-foot-2 shooter, is becoming a well-rounded scorer and leading Gresham.
John Miller, Tualatin
More of a football prospect than a basketball one (he was first team all-TRL in the fall), Miller’s athleticism has been on display this season, playing big minutes for Tualatin and providing strong defense.
Sam Abere, Lake Oswego
Abere is playing key minutes for the Lakers, among the TRL and state’s best. The 6-foot-1 wing was tasked with guarding Tigard’s Stevie Schlabach in a matchup on Friday and held the prolific scorer to 12 points.
