Marquee Matchups: Week 9 Recap
In one of the most packed weeks of the season up to this point, the big winners were Wayne, Upper Arlington, The Wellington School, Cleveland Central Catholic, and Mansfield St. Peter’s. Those games and more in our week nine run-through.
Jan. 23: Westerville North (60) at Upper Arlington (72)
The Golden Bears kicked off a tough week with a 12-point win where they led most of the game. Jeremiah Keene’s 24 points were overshadowed by a 25-ball from Notre Dame signee Dane Goodwin, per 270 Hoops. North is still searching for a signature win outside of Westerville this season.
Jan. 23: Bishop Ready (52) at The Wellington School (61)
A week after losing to Harvest Prep by six on the road, The Wellington School came away with a confidence-booster on Tuesday night. Ready was ranked #1 in the Division III State AP Poll coming into the week, while Wellington didn’t receive more than 12 points.
Jan. 24: Springfield (62) at Wayne (65)
DeShon Parker, Darius Quisenberry, and L’Christian “Blue” Smith combined for 41 points, 17 rebounds, and seven assists as Wayne remained undefeated, per the GWOC website. The overtime thriller was Springfield’s first loss. Check out this video from Bonus Sports for a visual recap.
Jan. 26: Versailles (61) at Minster (41)
It was an all-around struggle for Minster on Friday night, who continues to struggle to bring a consistent product on the floor. Justin Ahrens led Versailles with 24-points, per Press Pros Magazine. Versailles remains undefeated in the Midwest Athletic Conference going into the last week in December.
Jan. 26: Garfield Heights (59) at St. Ignatius (72)
Ignatius bounced back from their week eight loss against Lakewood St. Edward with a signature win at home against Garfield Heights. That’s the fourth loss in a row for Garfield Heights who haven’t won since their last home game on December 28, 2017.
Jan. 26: Eastmoor Academy (57) at Columbus South (50)
Eastmoor is rolling right now. The defending Regional Champions are on a seven-game win streak, including Ws over South, Cincinnati Hughes, and Walnut Ridge. Tim Smith, Taevion Kinsey, Randy Olverson, and Stephan Williams were all in double-figures for EA, per 270 Hoops.
Jan. 26: McNicholas (54) at Fenwick (34)
McNick, #2 team in the Division II AP Poll, had their most impressive win of the season Friday night over a quality Fenwick group. Senior point guard Ryan Reidy scored 18 and tallied five steals in the win, per the GCL website.
Jan. 27: Wapakoneta (50) at St. Henry (53)
St. Henry continues to build a strong résumé as a Division IV team with an impressive non-conference win over Wapakoneta. Senior Tyler Schlarman led St. Henry with 27 points, per the Dayton Daily News.
Jan. 27: Northmor (61) at Mansfield St. Peter’s (67)
The reigning Division IV Player of the Year Jared Jakubick scored 28 points to keep St. Peter’s undefeated, per Brian Skowronski. Northmor came into the game ranked #9 in the Division III AP Poll.
Jan. 27: Cleveland Central Catholic (44) at St. Ignatius (43)
Despite losing notable seniors to graduation and a transfer before the season, CCC moved to 11-2 with a quality win over Ignatius. The Ironmen seven-game win streak includes wins over Iggy, VASJ, and Brunswick.
Jan. 27: Hilliard Bradley (54) vs. Pickerington Central (33) at Ohio Dominican
Isaiah Speelman (18), Matt Allocco (13), and Chris Mayfield (11) combined for 42 points for their 12th win of the season, per 270 Hoops. In the loss, reigning Regional Champion Pickerington Central moved to under-.500.
Jan. 27: Upper Arlington (45) vs. Eastmoor Academy (30) at Ohio Dominican
Both members of UA’s D-I recruit duo recorded double-doubles as Dane Goodwin had 15 points and 12 rebounds while Max Martz contributed 16 points and 10 boards, per Todd Koonce. This was EA’s first loss to an Ohio team since their Dec. 2 opener against Moeller.
Jan. 27: Princeton (67) vs. Wayne (72) at Wilmington
Wayne topped off their week with a non-conference win over Princeton to remain undefeated. The state’s #1 team was led by Youngstown State signee Darius Quisenberry who scored 31 points, dished five assists, and grabbed four boards, per the GWOC website.
Jan. 28: Shaker Heights (58) vs. Pickerington North (65) at John Carroll
The 5 o’ clock headliner was taken by Jerome Hunter and the Pickerington North Panthers. It was Pick North’s 13th consecutive win and 14th overall. Shaker also lost to Brunswick this weekend.
