A look at several players who are raising their profile through the early stages of the season
With the Holiday season nearing the rear view mirror and the action on the hardwood about to heat back up, Prep Hoops takes a look at several players who are raising their profile with strong performances through the early stages of the 2017=2018 season.
Jackie Johnson, 5’10, G, 2021, Wichita North
Johnson has been giving opponents buckets through the early stages of the 2017-18 season, helping North open the season 3-1. He is averaging 24.3 points, 4.3 assists and 4.3 rebounds as he has put together a well-rounded floor game. A standout shooter, Johnson made 14 3-pointers in the Redskins’ first four games.
Javon Reliford, 6’0, G, 2019, Labette County
Reliford has helped the Grizzlies open the season 5-1 as he puts up big numbers this season, averaging 23.7 points, 8.0 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game this season. A standout shooter, Reliford has already made 13 3-pointers in six games but hasn’t solely relied on that aspect of his game. He has already shot 62 free throws this season as he works hard to get to the basket.
Keyon Thomas, 5’11, PG, 2019, Bonner Springs
One of the state’s premier point guards, Thomas has the ability to break down opponents off the dribble, can get to the basket and make plays for others. He has not only averaged 21 points per game but has also shot 44 percent from 3-point range. He is averaging 3.5 assists, 4.7 rebounds and 3.0 steals per game as he plays a well-rounded floor game.
Dasani Giardina, 5’11, G, 2018, Highland Park
A hard-nosed point guard who can also put the ball in the basket, Giardina has helped the Scots open the season 4-2, averaging 20.5 points and 3.3 rebounds per game. Giardina is known for his outside shooting — he has made 12 3-pointers six games this season — but has done a good job of getting to the basket this season.
Jeff Wake, 6’2, G, 2018, Eisenhower
A standout perimeter shooter, Wake put together a 33-point performance on Dec. 15 in an 88-76 win over Dodge City. He is shooting nearly 50 percent from 3-point range and is averaging 18.2 points per game as well as 4.4 rebounds per game.
Micah Jacques, 6’1, G, 2020, Wichita Southeast
Jacques was putting together a big freshman season before it came to a premature end a year ago. But he has picked up right where he left off and is off to a strong start to his sophomore season, averaging 16.8 points, 5.0 rebounds and shot 50 percent from the field.
