Iowa’s Player of the Week Poll (8)
John Herrick (2018)
6’6 SF, Boone
Boone is peaking at the right time, winners of five straight and eight of nine, and the Toreadors big and athletic forward John Herrick is peaking, too. In two wins last week over Ballard and Carlisle, Herrick was outstanding. He went for 25 points and eight rebounds against the Bombers, and that was child’s play compared to his 29 point, 10 rebound, four assist, four block effort against the Wildcats.
Ben Obert (2019)
6’3 G, Coon Rapids-Bayard
A big and versatile guard, Obert is making a case to make a major jump in the upcoming 2019 rankings. He’s having a fine season with the Crusdaers. And in three games last week, he was especially good, going for 26.3 points, 8.0 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game. During Thursday night’s win over Paton-Churdan, Obert pieced together one of the better games of the season in Iowa; 26 points, seven steals, six assists, six rebounds and three blocks.
Carter Boothe (2018)
6′ G, Central Decatur
Boothe’s Cardinals have won eight straight games, and last they week added wins against Nodaway Valley and Southeast Warren. A well-established do-it-all floor general, Booth was especially adept at finding his teammates for buckets in those two wins. He dished out 17 helpers in the Southeast Warren win, and eight more in the Nodaway Valley W. Booth averaged 15 points, 12.5 assists and three steals last week.
Lucas Duax (2018)
6’3 PG, Dubuque, Hempstead
A future Upper Iowa Peacocks point guard. Lucas Duax made it very clear last week that he’s on a mission this season, and that’s to get his Hempstead Mustangs back to the state tourney for the second straight season. Hempstead bounced back from a very uncharacteristic three-game losing skid last week by winning two games. Duax was all over the court in the wins over Prairie and City High, averaging 24.5 points on 57 percent shooting (he was 6-8 from deep), 7.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 3.0 steals and a block per game.
AJ Coons (2020)
6’5 G/F, Solon
Currently Iowa’s 7th-ranked 2020, AJ Coons is already a superstar at a young age. The sophomore definitely has embraced that superstar role at Solon this season, and last week he burst out of his seams in two Spartans wins. Against Anamosa and Beckman Catholic, Coons averaged 26 points on 56 percent shooting (71 percent from deep). The Iowa Barnstormers product added 3.o assists and 1.5 steals per win for good measure.
