Ghiden’s Stock is Rising
In the fall of 2015, American Canyon High School guard Malik Ghiden was gearing up for his first varsity season as a sophomore. With high hopes of leading American Canyon High School to its first playoff berth in their young school history, Ghiden and the Wolves fell short finishing in 5th place in league play. Despite falling short in the 2015-2016 season, there was a lot of optimism regarding a possible playoff berth in 2016-2017 due to the amount returning players. Another reason for the optimism was the overall development of Ghiden.
Ghiden’s development and the experience of the returning players helped American Canyon High School reach the playoffs for the first time this past season. Ghiden also received honorable mention for all-conference. Ghiden talked about his development as a player.
“As a sophomore, I was limited in my ability to score because I lacked ball handling and shooting from the outside”, Ghiden said. “I worked hard on improving my ball handling and shooting, which I feel has been essential to my recent success”, Ghiden added.
This season Malik has taking over the leadership role for his team. Ghiden put up a career high 33 points against Rodriguez Friday night to lead his team to a victory. Ghiden also pulled in eight rebounds to go along with his 33 point effort. Perhaps the most impressive stat about Ghiden’s performance was his field goal percentage. Ghiden shot 12 for 15 from the field, and was able to get to the rim and knock down a series of open shots.
Ghiden has received junior college interest but still no offers from 4 year schools. He plans on playing another season of AAU to not only gain more exposure, but to also continue to develop his game.
