The Wildcats enter Friday’s contest winners of their last three games. Seniors David Exline (6’3” 17.4ppg, 7rpg), Jaden Lee (6’2” 13.2ppg) Willie Cano ( 6’2” 10.2ppg) are all double digit scorers along with Junior Kingdom Artis (6’5” 16.4ppg). Williams Field has won their last NINE games and are looking to establish themselves as a contender in the 5A (D-2) division.
The Blackhawks struggled early to find an offensive rhythm however, Nick Cupp-Allen got hot hitting a 3 and a two-handed jam on consecutive possessions. Based on their initial play the Wildcats still found themselves ahead after one. In the 2nd the Blackhawks found their shooting touch from the outside and improved their defensive rotations to take a 30-25 halftime lead.
The Blackhawks jumped out to a double-digit lead in the 3rd playing with tons of energy. However, Mesquite climbed back into things and even took a 46-45 lead after Kingdom Artis hit a spinning half court shot to give them the lead. The Blackhawks battled back in the fourth behind a solid defensive effort. Once the game got tight the Blackhawks were able to maintain the lead with clutch free throws down the stretch to get a tough home win 69-59!
Best PG: Jordan Wollangk (Mesquite)- does a great job of handling defensive pressure maintaining his dribble. Can hit the open jumper and does a great job finding the open man and rotating the ball.
Best Athlete(s): Nick Cupp-Allen (WF)- 6’1’ Senior is also a starting wide receiver for the Blackhawks football team which is routinely a final four contender in their division. Long arms with great bounce.
1A. Jaden Lee (Mesquite)- another great leaper at just over 6 feet tall. More muscular/compact build than his counterpart in this category, he has improved his jump shot over previous years and is a pickpocket on ball defender.
Best Shooter: Jake Lowell (WF)- The 6’7” Senior is a fluid guard that has a smooth release and is deadly behind the arc.
Hybrid: Kingdom Artis (Mesquite)- 6’5” Junior has a lot of ballhandling responsibilities for the Wildcats and is a good athlete. Will need to improve the release point on his jump shot in order to elevate his game.
6th Man: Camden Plewe (WF)- did a great job coming off the bench providing defense and timely scoring for the Blackhawks
