Eight Momentous Wins of the Week (1/8-1/13)
Early January is tough. The players generally get a break or breaks around Christmas and New Year’s. School schedules are all squirrely. Coaches notice players starting to mentally drift if they aren’t starting.
And yet the games are as significant as any of the season so far.
These eight games dictated which teams are poised for great Februarys.
Blackman over Riverdale
It looked for all the world like the 15-win Riverdale Warriors would be the first blemish for the hosting Blackman Blaze (17-0). Riverdale was run off the road by Trenton Gibson and a hot-shooting Brandon Thomas. Somebody will beat Blackman, right?
Franklin Centennial over Brentwood
A 15-4 Brentwood Bruin record masks a couple of duds from late December. It was no dud Tuesday as rivals Centennial and Brentwood clashed. Home standing Centennial captured a massive 58-57 victory.
Briarcrest Christian over Whitehaven
Coming off their biggest win of the season (over Huntington Prep), Whitehaven dropped a painful game to still undefeated Briarcrest Christian (19-0).
MBA over Baylor School
The Baylor School has a really promising team. They play defense with vigor, but a technical MBA Big Red team knocked them off last Tuesday, 60-56.
Brighton over Dyer County
Thursday Brighton and Taeylr Gatlin (Denver signee) got a look at Dyer County. Brighton’s 10th win on the year does not prove dominance, but it was a nice result, 68-66.
The Baylor School over McCallie
If that MBA win over Baylor School wasn’t surprising enough, Friday the Red Raiders turned around and handed McCallie (17-1) their first loss of the entire season.
Maryville over Farragut
Maryville (8-1) is second in District 4 to Bearden (9-0) The Bearden Bulldogs lost a single game in their first 22. To challenge for the title they need to win every game and Farragut challenged them Friday. Maryville won 48-46.
Sophomore Joe Anderson scored 20 of the team’s 48 points.
Brentwood Academy over Webster Groves (MO)
The Eagles of BA showcased their surging team well in Bass Pro Shop Tournament of Champions.
