In a recent Twitter poll open to fans, players and coaches, Ja’Kavien Lewis was voted the December Defensive Player of the month.  The senior point guard from Carman Ainsworth High School notched 34% of the votes.  Coming in a close second was Jayvien Torrance, a senior guard from River Rouge.  He finished with 32% of the vote.  Clarkston senior guard CJ Robinson finished third with 24% of the votes.  Jalen Kelso, a senior guard from West Bloomfield High School was fourth with 10% of the votes.

JALEN KELSO (2018, G, West Bloomfield)

Kelso’s on ball defense was stellar the entire month.  He’s quick with his hands and his feet.  Kelso was constantly a threat to create a turnover in December.  He often drew the toughest defensive assignment and excelled in that role.

CJ ROBINSON (2018, G, Clarkston)

Robinson was stellar on both ends for Clarkston in December.  Robinson was counted on defensively against big time competition.  He played especially well when he was on the ball and played tough physical defense.  Robinson’s defense made offenses adjust around him.

JAYVIEN TORRANCE  (2018, G, River Rouge)

On one of the best team defenses in the state, Torrance still stood out.  Throughout December, he played defense with hustle and stamina.  This led to Torrance often simply outworking his opponent.  He was often asked to guard the other teams top offensive threat throughout the month.

JA’KAVIEN LEWIS (2018, G, Carman Ainsworth)

Lewis is not just a defensive stopper.  He is a flat out weapon on the defensive end.  Not surprisingly, he was rewarded with the December Defensive Player of the Month.  He prides himself on his on the ball defense, but is an elite defender anywhere and in any role on the perimeter.  Lewis is quick and physical enough to get in the face of his opponent.  He sets the tone of the game with his intensity on defense and turns defense into offense.  Lewis has sparked his team to a 3-1 start and is averaging 18 points, 8 assists, and 4 steals per game.
