Dayton-commit Dwayne Cohill (2018) continues to dazzle
Holy smokes, Holy Name’s Dwayne Cohill is so, so good. The 6’2’’ Dayton-commit put on a scintillating offensive show as he scored 29 points, showing off a varied offensive repertoire, while leading the Green Wave to a 102-72 win over Elyria Catholic on Jan. 30.
Cohill didn’t start for violation of an unspecified team rule, according to his coach. He entered the game at the start of the second quarter and immediately scored four quick points inside, including a dunk.
He exploded for 15 points in the third quarter. He tortured EC with a variety of spectacular inside moves while scoring his first six buckets of the frame. That prompted an Elyria Catholic fan to start screaming at Cohill that he couldn’t shoot.
If on cue Cohill connected on a 3-pointer that barely tickled the net. Cohill is just 68 points from reaching the 2,000 point mark for his career.
He also showed some toughness returning to the court after tweaking an ankle, which caused him to limp while walking out of the gym after the game.
Cohill did this all in front of the observant eye of a reporter from the Dayton Daily News who was dispatched to do a feature on the Flyers’ No. 1 Displaying strong athleticism possession after possession he got inside the EC defense and was able to elevate and wiggle to score around the cup. At one point he came away with a steal and dunk, which was his highlight of the night.
Cohill said he opted for Dayton in part because it’s coach, Anthony Grant, has an NBA background with the Oklahoma City Thunder, where he worked with Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook. Cohill has some of the freak athleticism of Westbrook. He runs a 4.3 40 and has a 37-inch vertical.
“It felt like home,” Cohill said of Dayton and his decision to commit. Ohio State, Penn State, West Virginia were just some of the many schools that offered Cohill.
Dorian Crutcher can score
Crutcher (2018), 6’4″ is EC’s No. 1 offensive threat scored 19 points. He had a nifty reverse layup. Isn’t the most orthodox offensive player, he’s herky-jerky, but does get buckets. Has a toughness and edge about him
Jarred Logan (2019) 6’5” impressed early for Elyria Catholic when the result was still in doubt. He can get to the rack and score with his long, lean frame.
Branson Taylor (2019), 6’7”, is a burly big who when energized makes a lot of plays. Finished with 12 points for EC and was very active early.
