The 2017-2018 Colorado high school basketball season is in full swing. Teams are gearing up to make a run at their prospective league titles. Teams from every league are starting league play with a clean slate and a brand new chance to make a statement in their area. Every team, Every game, must come ready to compete for a chance to call themselves league champions.
Prep Hoops is doing a final preview before league play kicks off and the 5A Colorado Springs Metro League is looking to be the best in the southern region of the state.
The three msot interesting teams out of the Colorado Springs Metro League are the Doherty Spartans, Rampart Rams, and Liberty Lancers.
Last Years record: 13-12
Head Coach: Ivan Chambers
Returning Starters: Moz Daria (Sr.), Kyle Bohuslavsky (Sr.), Sean Bohuslavsky (Jr.)
Other Returners: Jacob Burns (Sr.)
Last year the Lancers ended their season 13-12 with some great wins against Douglas County, Bear creek, and Monarch. They were lead by now senior Moz Doria who was a load for any team to deal with it.
the Lancers return three starters all averaging double digit scoring this year led by Moz ( 19ppg, 4ass,7rbs).
What to expect from Liberty this year:
This season you can expect the Liberty Lancers to be the league sleeper team. Their uptempo, run n gun pace will allow them to be in every game and the games where they shoot the ball well they will be able to shock a few of the leagues powerhouses. With a potential league player of the year on their team in Moz the Lancers look to make a push for the seemingly open Metro League title. This team will be exciting to watch, keep an eye out for some big wins from the Lancers and for them to be right in the thick of that league championship
Last Years Record: 18-7
Head Coach: J’on St. Clair
Returning Starters: Dawson Carper (Sr.), Josh Kovalec (Sr.), Jackson Ehrlin (Sr.)
Known Newcomers (transfer): Xavier Johnson (Sr.)
The Rams had an impressive season last year losing only 7 games in total and 2 in league play to the league champion Doherty Spartans. They play with a balanced game of speed, shooting, and power on the inside. with their Senior center Dawson Carper (14ppg,8rb) recently signing to play basketball at Hawaii University, the Rams have a player who can make a huge impact at both ends of the floor. Carper standing 6 ft 10 in is a load on the inside. with great feet and hands he has ability to catch the ball in traffic and finish at the rim and also catch and face from the post with a nice baby hook either hand. A gift of a transfer is always something any program welcomes but especially one as solid as Xavier Johnson(19ppg, 3ass, 5rbs). Johnson is a Great guard with size and strength and a real ability to get to the rim. as a starter in Fort Collins Xavier was the go to on his squad and looks to add depth and scoring ability to rampart. The player at the steering wheel for the rams is Returning starting point guard Josh Kovalec (18ppg, 5ass, 4rbs). He has a great feel for the game at the pg position and is the engine that gets them going.
What to Expect from Rampart:
The rams are at the forefront of the Colorado Springs Metro league and are on a crash course with the Spartans for a league championship. Rampart has a sour taste in their mouth from last year losing two very close, incredible games to the Spartans to give up the league championship. Expect the rams to be an overwhelming force inside and pound the ball to the paint. The Rams have every component they need this year to bring that league championship back to Rampart, so lets see if they can finally put it all together.
Last Years Record: 20-4
Head Coach: Eric Steinert
Returning Starters: Joe Golden (Sr.), Kyrele Benford( Sr.), Deangelo Shepard( Sr.)
Other Returners: Alijah Bates( Jr.), Demarious Carey( Sr.),
Known Necomers( Underclassmen): Eddie Whitmore(Jr.)
The Spartans are looking to put it all together this year. they have everything from size to depth and some may consider them to be “one of the most talented teams in the state.” with an all purpose player like their heart and soul Joe Golden( 11ppg, 12rbs) Doherty has a real shot at making a deep run in the playoff and winning this league. golden does everything for the Spartans scoring points, hitting the glass, and being an emotional leader, his presence on the court is known at every point of a game. Solid on the wing is Kyrele Benford( 12ppg, 8rbs). Benford is a streaky athlete with scoring ability on the inside and outside. stepping out to hit the three but also being able to score off the post inside Benford is a versatile threat that often becomes a mismatch for most teams. Any team needs a soling PG at the reigns and for the Spartans that is Demarious Carey( 8ppg, 3ass). Duke is very streaky scorer who can fill the stat sheet and excite the crowd when he gets going. His job is to secure the ball and make sure it gets to the horses Doherty has down low.
What to expect from Doherty:
Coming off of an upsetting playoff lose in the 2nd round last year the Spartans have a huge chip on their shoulder. Being bounced out of the playoffs much earlier then expected has left a sour taste in their mouth. Once again the Spartans are at the forefront of the Metro League and are again the favorites. Having all the talent they need you can expect the Spartans to put it all on the line this year, knowing they have a serious chance to make a deep playoff run. look for Doherty to win league, and make a push for that gold ball.
