Cobb County Polls (1/28) Pt. 1
Take a look at Cobb County’s top 4 squads in this week’s polls.
1. McEachern (Powder Springs, GA) 20-2
The Indians have been rolling since their last lost to DeMatha (MD) back at the Cancer Research Classic in West Virginia and are currently on a 9 game winning streak since then. Coach Thompson and his squad have defeated out of state opponents such as Trotwood (OH), Pickerington Central (OH), and Village Christian (NC) during that streak and a few region opponents. 2020 PG Sharife Cooper and 2019 SG Isaac Okoro have been leading their squad to an overall 20-2 record so far and are undefeated against teams in the state of Georgia, last lost that came from a GHSA team was Tift County back in the 2017 class 7A final four. Earlier this month, the junior center Babatunde Akingbola has also committed to Auburn. McEachern also picked up another ESPN top ranked propsect in the class of 2019 last week in 2019 SG Charles Smith IV. Charles is a 6’5 sharp shooter who has transferred from basketball powerhouse La Lumiere (IN). Smith looks to add fuel to the fire and helping McEachern capture that state championship.
2. Pebblebrook (Mabelton, GA) 19-2
Pebblebrook’s last lost came back in late November in the famous Holiday Hoopsgiving to Newton High School, since then the Falcons are 17-0. During their outstanding winning streak Pebblebrook has defeated some top competition, so it has not been a walk in the park. The Falcons have defeated South Cobb (2), Jonesboro, Campbell (2), Westlake, Wheeler, Shiloh, Lower Richland (SC), Grayson, Blanche Ely (FL), Edgewater (FL), Lakewood Ranch (FL), and Berkmar. 2018 wing Mervin James (Canisius) has been putting on a tear these last few games and making a statement for Cobb player of the year. It is not just James, senior guards Grant Howard, DJ Murray, Josh Graham, and junior guard Jalen Harper have all been making an impact on this run. Pebblebrook will have another tough week to end the regular season as they host Westlake Tuesday night and Wheeler Friday night. Both games will be played at the Cobb County Civic Center.
3. Wheeler (Marietta, GA) 15-8
2018 center EJ Montgomery has been having a great senior year for the Wildcats. Montgomery was recently picked to compete in the 2018 McDonald’s All American game, which will be played in Atlanta, GA on March 28th. The Wheeler Wildcats are 7-3 so far for the month of January. The Wildcats has had some key wins this month with wins over Duluth, Westlake (2), and Summit (TN). All 3 losses this month so far have been against top programs such as Webster Grove (MO), Christ School (NC), and Meadowcreek. Wheeler sits #2 in Region 2 class 7A behind Pebblebrook, who they will face this Friday night.
4. Pope (Marietta, GA) 16-5
The Pope Greyhounds have quietly won 10 of thier last 11 games. This is a good sign for Coach Abney going into the region tournament. Pope is coming off a big win on the road over their neighborhood rival Sprayberry this past Saturday night. The Greyhounds currently sit at #2 in Region 7 class 6A and will be hosting currently the #3 and #4 squads this week with Cenntennial this Tuesday night and North Atlanta Saturday nihgt.
