Cobb County After Christmas Polls Pt. 2
It has been a great holiday of hoops and the second half of the 2017-2018 season is about to be in full effect. Here is a look at our 6-10 public school programs below. South Cobb, Pope, Sprayberry, and North Cobb round out the top 10 this week (12/31-1/6).
South Cobb (Austell, GA) – Record: 8-4 – Good Wins: Greensboro (AL), Callaway (MS). Bad Losses: None
After making their final four appearance last season, Coach Moultrie has a young squad and they are still developing. So far the South Cobb Eagles are off to a good start coming back from break 8-4. The Eagles started off the break with back to back region wins over River Ridge and Sequoyah before taking their talents to South Georgia where they competed in the McDonald’s Invitational. South Cobb finished 2-1 in the showcase with their only lost coming to a team they faced in last season’s final four which was Brunswick High School. The Eagles lost 55-54. They will have a few days off before playing back to back road region games at Osborne and at Harrison. These boys have a big game coming up on Tuesday Jan. 9th as they host crosstown rival Pebblebrook, who they lost to in overtime back on Dec. 1st.
Pope (Marietta, GA) – Record: 9-4 – Good Wins: Sprayberry, Durham Academy (NC). Bad Losses: Westminister
The Greyhounds of Pope started their break with their own SEBA Showcase event on Saturday Dec. 16th. But they took a lost to a good Dacula team 68-53. Pope then takes a region lost to North Atlanta on Dec. 19th. Coach Abney and his Pope sqaud then bounces back after the Christmas Holiday winning the Westminister Holiday Tournament and 2018 WG Jackson Baylark receiving the most valuable player award of the whole tournament. Pope will travel to Centennial for a region game Thursday Jan. 4th.
Sprayberry (Marietta, GA) – Record: 8-5 – Good Wins: South Cobb. Bad Losses: None
The Sprayberry Yellow Jackets did not compete in any holiday tournaments this season but did have two region games and a rivalry game over break. Sprayberry first hosted Osborne on Friday Dec. 15th and defeated them at a score of 76-32. They then faced their neighborhood rival in Kell and defeated them in OT 76-74 and where 2018 WG Khadim Samb (Idaho) had a monster game with a 34 point performance. The Jackets then took a tough lost to region rival Creekview 61-51, who leads their region so far. Sprayberry is better then what their record says. 2018 CG Micach McCuen is emerging as a great player and is having a great season for Sprayberry. McCuen is averaging 15.3 points per game and is one of the best rebounding guards in the state. The Jackets come off the break hosting region opponent Harrison on Wednesday Jan. 3rd.
North Cobb (Acworth, GA) – Record: 7-7 – Good Wins: None. Bad Losses: None
North Cobb has surpassed their win total from last season with already winning 7 games after last season only winning a total of 3. This year’s squad looks more improved and experienced. The Warriors suffered back to back losses to powerhouse McEachern and a lost to Harrison earlier in the break. Since then the Warriors are 4-1. North Cobb competed in the Sequoyah Holiday Tournament where they defeated Fellowship Christian and East Paulding. 2018 PG Nayari Dampier finished with 23 points and 10 three quarters against East Paulding. The Warriors then competed in the Campbell Holiday Tournament after Christmas where they went 2-1 with wins over Cumberland Christian and Walton and close lost against Mays 63-59. 2019 F Kevin Hester made the All Tournament Team of course. Kevin Hester is having a pheonomenal junior season avergaing 16.0 points per game , 13.2 rebounds per game, and at least 2 blocks per game. North Cobb will have a few days off and then will have back to back games this weekend as they travel to region opponent Mareitta on Friday Jan. 5th and host Newnan on Saturday Jan. 6th.
