Brush strikes late: Observations from the Arcs big win over Cornerstone at D4D
The Brush High Arcs continue to be one of the most impressive teams in Northeast Ohio when it comes to talent and execution.
The Arcs (12-4) pulled out a huge win against Cornerstone Christian at the Jan. 28 Dunk 4 Diabetes Shootout at the DeCarlo Varsity Center on the campus of John Carroll University. All kinds of college coaches, AAU bigwigs, talent wonks, shoe guys and other prep hoop-types were on hand for the event.
A late traditional 3-point play by Brush’s point guard D.J. Dial late in the game turned out to the difference in a 50-48 win.
Cornerstone had a chance to tie, but their standout senior and Furman recruit missed two of three free throws after being fouled on a 3-pointer.
Cornerstone had a chance to win or at least tie but it’s standout sharpshooting senior Michael Bothwell missed two of three free throws after being fouled on a 3-point attempt.
Here are some observations:
Brush’s John Hugley IV (2020) continues to develop; The 6’9” Hugley was able to establish position all night long and rebounded well at both ends. He finished the night with 14 points, including a bunch in the fourth quarter, and was named the game’s MVP. He’s developing an unstoppable little jump hook; hand trouble finishing against Cornerstone, but one Division I coach raved about Hugley’s great feet and great hands.
D. J. Dial (2019) finished the game with 13 points. He kept Brush in the game in the first half with a nine-point second quarter. He can get to the basket and handle but had to sit out with foul trouble. His coach Chet Mason, who played Division I college basketball and then professionally overseas, raves about Dial and how he doesn’t think there is a player in the state who can stay in front of the 5’9″ guard.
Andre Harris (2019) scored seven points, all of them coming in the third quarter. He connected on two 3-pointers and played some solid defense on Cornerstone’s Bothwell, who is a superb high school scorer.
Brush senior Tyler Williams at 6’5” eats up space and is always in the middle of the action and around the ball. Has an offer from West Virginia State. Very active.
Bothwell is a lot of fun to watch. The gym actually gasped when he missed the free throws at the end of the game, so shocking was the result.
He finished with a game-high 22 points, which included an explosive second quarter in which he hit on four 3-pointers and scored 15 points.
Kendall Saunders (2018), 6’5”, who is unsigned, scored 15 and connected on four triples in an impressive performance.
