Region tournament is nearby which means there are games we need to circle on our calender. Another big week for a few Cobb County Schools. This week some of Cobb County’s best public school programs take the court for some important games for this week. Pebblebrook, Wheeler, McEachern, Campbell, South Cobb, and Pope are just the few programs that have big important games this week (1/9-1/13). Take a look below.
Pebblebrook (14-2) @ South Cobb (10-4) – Tuesday Jan. 9th 7:30pm
The Pebblebrook Falcons are on the half way part of their tough 5 game road trip. Pebblebrook is currently on a 12 game winning streak and recently went 2-0 in the Prep Hoops Sun Bash Showcase in Tampa Bay, FL beating Edgewater (FL) and Lakewood Ranch (FL). The Pebblebrook and South Cobb rivalry, in my opinion, is the best rivalry on the court in the county. These two last met at Pebblebrook on Friday Dec. 1st, where Pebblebrook came out on top in OT 69-63. For the Eagles of South Cobb, they will be coming in winning 6 out of their last 7 games and an overall record of 10-4. These two squads take this game personal for bragging rights as this is a neighborhood rivalry as both schools are only about 5 minutes apart, literally.
McEachern (11-2) @ Kennesaw Mountain (10-3) – Thursday Jan. 11th 7:30pm
This is a Region 3 Class 7A matchup. McEachern and Kennesaw Mountain are both at the top of the region so far and this will be the first time these two squads will meet this season. Both teams feature two of the top four leading scorers in Cobb County. 2020 PG Sharife Cooper and 2019 SG Isaac Okoro both are averaging 19.9 points per game for McEachern. 2019 WG Jalyn McCreary is averaging 19.5 points per game and 2018 CG Josh Strong is averaging 21.5 points per game. McEachern is coming off only their 3rd lost in two years after losing to DeMatha (MD) in the Cancer Research Classic in West Virginia. Kennesaw Mountain is also coming off a lost to Walton over the weekend. Both squads will have another region game on Tuesday night before the two meet Thursday. McEachern will host Marietta and Kennesaw Mountain will travel to North Paulding.
Pebblebrook (14-2) @ Westlake (8-5) – Friday Jan. 12th 7:30pm
If you want to see what the definition of a rivalry game is then I would advised you to head to Westlake High School Friday night. These two squads have a real beef with one another. The Pebblebrook-Westlake games are full of hype and intensity both on and off the court. This is a Region 2 Class 7A matchup. Since the 2014-2015 season, Pebblebrook and Westlake have met 10 times, twice meeting in the region championship, and one time meeting in the state championship in 2016. This one is definitely one of the top games in the peach state. This will be an up and down affair. The battle between 2019 CG Chase Hunter and 2018 CG DJ Murray should be a great matchup this Friday night.
Cambridge (14-1) @ Pope (11-4) – Friday Jan. 12th 7:30pm
This is a Region 7 Class 6A matchup. These two have already met before dating back to Friday Dec. 1st where Cambridge came out with the win 73-62. Both squads are at the top of this region and this can really determine the #1 and #2 seeds when it comes time for the region tournament. The Cambridge Bears are currently riding a 13 game winning streak. Pope is riding a 5 game winning streak. Both squads will face other region opponents Tuesday night before meeting Friday night at Pope. Pope High School can be one of the toughest places to play, especially on a Friday night. This is no doubt a huge game for Pope as they seek revenge and that number one spot in the region.
