The Best: Catoosa vs Woodward
Catoosa and Woodward met in the consolation semifinals of the Port City Classic. They played a tight first quarter of play in which Woodward came away with the upper hand after catching fire from the perimeter. Catoosa then got things rolling and opened up a big lead. The led by as much 16 throughout the game, but in the fourth quarter Woodward started chipping away. They cut the lead all the way to 5 before falling to the Indians 56-50.
MVP: Mike Dillon 2018 Catoosa Wing
Dillon was the best player on the court in this consolation semifinal matchup. He was athletic and lengthy. He is listed at 6-3 on the roster, which is a lot smaller than he seemed on the court. He was a beast on both ends of the court, affecting the game in almost every aspect of it. He got the rebounds for the Indians, which led to second chance points. He finished with a tied game-high of 21 points. Dillon will be pivotal for the Indians moving forward. If he can continue to play with aggression and heart, the Indians will be able to compete with anyone in the state.
Woodward’s Key: The Money Ball
Woodward kept their selves in the game with 3’s. They were on fire from the perimeter and hit 8 3-pointers throughout the game. When Woodward trailed by 16 going into the fourth quarter the money ball got them back within striking distance.
The Gamechanger: Second Chance Points
Catoosa was more physical than Woodward on the night. They had a bigger team and that combined with the extreme effort they gave led to them getting second chance points throughout the night. They were constantly crashing the offensive boards. The second chance points were the difference maker in a tightly contested game.
Best Role Player: Damon Phelps 2018 Catoosa Guard
Phelps did not catch your eye throughout the game. He was a quiet player that got the tough baskets for the Indians and led by example. He worked hard and played for his team. He was unselfish and played his role to perfection. He finished 16 points for the Indians and was the much-needed second piece of offense for the Indians.
Offensive MVP Jack McClung 2020 Woodward Guard
Jack McClung kept the Boomers in the game. He was the spark needed by Woodward. He handled the ball and took control of the offense when he needed to. He was vital to Woodward making the comeback in the fourth quarter. He shot the ball well and finished the game with a tied game-high 21 points. McClung and Woodward should be fun to watch in the coming seasons as they only graduate one starter. McClung will hope to shoot as well as he did today moving forward.
