5 Takeaways : Lake Marion vs Timberland
Prep Hoops went inland to St Stephen, SC to catch Lake Marion vs Timberland HS play. Timberland lies out in a rural area and the closest gas station or restaurant is several miles away. The game featured two teams battling to stay in the playoff race this season.
The Lake Marion Gators thought they might run away and hide in this one when they jumped out to a 10-0 lead to start the game. Timberland chipped away at the lead when Tyler Sumpter scored on a lay-up to make it a 21-19 game. Traveon Davis got called for a technical foul for hanging on the rim after trying to convert a dunk.
The Gators led going into the 4th quarter at 36-35. Sumpter went down with a injury with 1:44 left in the game with the Wolves trailing 47-42. Roger “RJ” Gibbs hit a floater to make it 48-46 with 56.3 left. The Gators would be to much down the stretch and prevailed on the road with a 54-51 region win.
MVP : Gershon Robinson (2018) Lake Marion HS
Robinson 5’7 is small in size but plays with a big heart. Robinson was a constant pest all day long for the Wolves getting into the lane and breaking ankles with speed up the floor. Robinson scored 8 points but put his teammates in the right position every time on the floor. Robinson is for sure one of the quickest kids I’ve seen handle the ball 94 feet from side to side.
Best Player off the Bench : Tragan Green (2018) Lake Marion HS
Green 6’5 back to the basket post player scored 13 points in the victory. Green a undersized post is not overally skilled guy got all of his points on put backs and activity around the cup. Green will need to entertain junior college options for next season.
Best College Talent : Traevon Davis (2020) Lake Marion HS
Davis was the most talented player on the floor. Davis a shooting guard still needs to learn how to play every possession of the game hard at all times. Davis scored 9 points today in the victory.
Best Underclassmen : Allen Jones (2022) Timberland HS
Jones 6’5 8th grader has a bright future. Jones has HUGE HANDS and FEET already and great wingspan. Jones moves down the floor and still seems a bit timid but that will change down the road eventually.
Who’s this guy ? : Tyler Sumpter (2019) Timberland HS
Prep Hoops had never seen this young man before until today. Sumpter connected on some three pointers while always being around the ball. Sumpter 6’0 shooting guard is averaging 13.9 ppg this season. Sumpter seems to excel on the gridiron for the Wolves. Timberland HS has a great football tradition.
