Westover HS Bounces Back to win the Holiday Classic
The Westover HS Wolverines are off to a great start this season with a record of 8-1, the program has enjoyed much success over the years and features one of the top coaches in the state in George Stackhouse. They started the season off 7-0 winning all of those games by double digits except for their matchup with Maiden in which they would win by 3 points. This would lead to the matchup with Terry Sanford HS at Terry Sanford and the Wolverines would come up short in the matchup losing by 17 points so it would be back to the drawing board for the Wolverines.
Westover would get back in the lab and prepare for the upcoming Cumberland County Holiday Classic with their first matchup being against Grays Creek HS, a team that features talented guard Trevor Thomas. The Wolverines would win that matchup and move on to a Semi-Final game against 71st HS and their talented group that features 6’6 Junior Forward Brion McLaurin. Although McLaurin would have a solid night, the Wolverines used some outstanding defense to throw off the 71st offensive flow and would hold on to get the win to send them to the Championship game.
The Championship game would be a rematch of their only loss as Terry Sanford defeated Jack Britt in blowout fashion the night before. Once again Westover would use their defense to dictate the flow of the game and would bring home the Holiday Classic Championship.
If you haven’t see this Westover Team play then you are truly missing out, they get after it on the defensive end and use a 5 out 5 in substitution rotation which causes big time issues for other teams that may not be as deep. In this day and age we know that many programs look to play the run and gun style but watching Westover HS play is different, they show us that defense still wins championships!
