West Port v. Matanzas: Tim Brinkley Shootout Standouts
Ten teams came together at North Marion High School in Citra, Florida to celebrate the life of former coach Tim Brinkley, whose sudden passing after a car accident shook the city. The shootout is their way of never forgetting Brinkley, who was pillar in the community. All five games were great. Here’s a few standouts.
Greg Layne – Matanzas: This 6’5” senior could do no wrong for his band of Pirates. His stout frame made defenders move out of the way when he drove the ball into the paint. On defense, it was hard to get a shot off when Layne was near the basket. He notched a few blocks in the game. Layne’s mid-range jumper is on-point. He’s worth a look!
Arvin Mackey – West Port: Arvin has the motor remain a solid piece to this West Port team. He scored 19 points in the game, doing so by being a great finisher in the post. A thinner wing-player, he was able to weave through tight spots and put it in the cup. On D, Mackey traps well at half court and forced a steal late in the fourth by doing so.
Devin Mathews – Matanzas: The long-limbed senior wing played a very patient, yet aggressive game vs. West Port. He looked for his best opportunities to penetrate and lay it in through the defense, but also moved with enough pace to see open man for a kick out. If he’s met at the rim with traffic, Mathews dons a nifty reverse. Can also hit the corner three if he’s set.
Steven Colbert – West Port: Colbert put up 15 points in the game and did it by becoming fearless in the post. He’s not afraid to bang and muscle his way towards the cup. Also a really good rebounder on both sides of the ball. He made his presence felt, for sure.
Branden Gilyard – Matanzas: Without question, the hardest-hustling guy out on the floor. Offensively, he does what you’d like to have from a point guard: creates scoring opportunities to others, great passer into the post, kicks it out to open shooters if the paint is clogged after driving, scores when called upon. But, when you literally see him diving into the scorers table to save a loose ball, that puts it over the top. Not to mention a half-court buzzer-beater to win the game. He’s clutch. He’s more than good.
