Top Performers: Miami
Emmanuel Dowuona, Westwood Christian
After being sidelined recently to an injury, the 6-foot-11, 220-pound Dowuona scored 18 points, tore down 13 rebounds, and had 10 blocked shots for a triple double. The Purdue signee showed the physical traits and elite rim protection that made him such a highly sought after prospect on the recruiting market. Dowuona is South Florida’s most prominent big since 6-foot-10 Cardinal Newman star John Collins (now with the Atlanta Hawks) of West Palm Beach.
Stephen Johnson, Champagnat High School
While Champagnat ultimately wound up losing a 98-96 double overtime thriller to St. Brendan, Johnson registered his presence with a wowing 44-point eruption. The 5-foot-10 Class of 2018 was the energizer for the Class 3A Champagnat, as he provided timely buckets down the stretch.
Johnson’s career high occurred just a day after a lackluster 4-for-14 shooting performance during a 58-54 loss to David Crockett (TN). It was as impressive a bounce back as we’ve witnessed this year.
Sebastian Guiton, Westwood Christian
The 6-foot-9 stretch four has been making a name for himself as one of the top floor-spreading, hot shooting forwards remaining on the recruiting market in Florida. Heating up at the right time, Guiton dropped 37 points (on the strength of seven 3-point field goals) during a recent performance against Centennial High of Ohio. Guiton has the feathery touch from downtown and also a polished interior skill set that makes him a dangerous all around scoring threat.
Kentron Poitier, SLAM MIAMI
Poitier has been a consistent force all season for a SLAM Miami team that’s beginning to gauge its grit against tougher competition and garner some visibility throughout the city.
During the UA Classic at Westminster Christian High School, Poitier scored 17 points and added 10 rebounds in propelling SLAM Miami to a 64-57 win over Southridge. Displaying active hands all across the defensive end and applying ramped up on-ball pressure, Poitier added four steals.
