Team Rose Shootout: 2018 Evals Pt 2
PrepHoopsIllinois covered the Team Rose Shootout at Mt. Carmel High School over the weekend. This great event allowed us to evaluate prospects in a variety of classes and college levels. Here is part two of our evaluations from the class of 2018.
PG Chase Adams (Orr – 2018)
This was unequivocally the best we have ever seen Chase Adams. The Orr 5’8” point guard came out on fire against Danville. The quick and shifty lead guard was confident and looking to score. Adams drilled pull up mid-range jumpers all over the floor. He sets up his shot and has balance every time he releases it. Mixed in some acrobatic layups in the paint. As the game went on he hit a couple threes. Best there off the catch. Quality passer that made several great dishes inside and finding Smith for open looks from three. Defensively he is a pesky defender that pressures the ball. His lack of height will hurt him somewhat on that end at the college level, but he plays really hard on that end. Finished with 37 points. Looked the part of a D2 point guard in this game!
SF Dannie Smith (Orr – 2018)
Smith is a tough and physical 6’5” small forward. Powerful inside finishing around the hoop. Where he really shined was drilling threes as he hit a trio of them back to back to back in the second half. When he gets space and his feet are set he makes them most of the time. Lots of arc on his shot. Smith had 25 points. Projects as a high level D2 prospect that could find a home at the low-major level.
SF Tyronn Mosley (Orr – 2018)
The Wisconsin Milwaukee commit really struggled in this one. He brings great size and projectability to the table. Hit a couple threes, but also was inconsistent shooting it throughout the game. Seemed to settle far too often for his jumper instead of using his long strides to get to the rack. Has the potential to be a quality defender at the next level. Went for 10 points.
SG Brian Hernandez (Orr – 2018)
Hernandez is a shooting specialist and unfortunately it was not going down against Danville. The 5’10” senior is strictly a two guard that has a strong body, but for the most part is just a spot up shooter. He only hit one and could not find a rhythm at all from deep. Went for 5 points. Still like him at the small college level as a player that can shoot the rock from deep.
PF Raekwon Drake (Orr – 2018)
Drake might have had the worst game I have seen out of him in four years. Big fan of what he brings to the table with his athleticism, motor, and toughness. He seemed disinterested and not around the ball like he usually is. Got beat on the glass quite a bit and didn’t finish in the paint. Hit a mid-range jumper and got a dunk late. Other than that not much production from Drake. He had only 6 points. We will count this as just an off night for the senior as we feel he would be a really nice fit at the low-major level as one of the better unsigned seniors on the board.
PF Tyree Martin (Curie – 2018)
Martin is a 6’8” power forward who is among the top available post prospects in the state. The senior big man is best on the defensive end. Protected the rim using his length and timing to block shots without fouling. Rebounds well in traffic. Finished a sweet high/low on a pass from his brother. Also finished another dump off. He had 8 points. Low-major and D2 programs should take a look at him and his brother.
PF Traevon Martin (Curie – 2018)
Martin is a 6’8” power forward that is more offensively gifted right now and showed that in this game. Passed it well out of the high post. Hit a mid-range jumper. Finished late with two key scores on an up and under along with a dunk. Rebounds well within his area. Martin had 6 points. Low-major prospect.
SG Jayden Gasby (Curie – 2018)
Gasby led the team in scoring, but most of it was getting to the free throw line late in the game. Athletic and strong shooting guard that attacks off the bounce and draws contact at the rim. He had 10 points. D2 potential.
PG DeMarco Graham (Curie – 2018)
Graham is a new name to our radar. The 5’7” point guard is a lefty that forces shots from deep although he did hit a few off the catch. Made several nice passes inside. The small college prospect had 6 points.
C Tyler Clarke (Curie – 2018)
Clarke is another prospect that this was our first time evaluating him. He is a legit 6’10” with length and wiry strength. Little bit stiff offensively right now and is a player we will continue to monitor.
SG Jordan Matthews (St. Rita – 2018)
Another quality performance out of this senior shooting guard. The St. Rita guard was good at the Chicago Elite Classic and was the Mustangs best player again. Takes quality angles to the hoop and likes to score with acrobatic layups. Shifty getting to the hoop. Strong body allows him to take a bump. Matthews had 17 points. High level small college prospect with D2 potential.
F Landen Gladney (St. Rita – 2018)
Gladney has impressed us early in the season with his play at both CEC and Team Rose. The 6’5” combo forward finishes well through contact converting multiple and-1s. He had 8 points. Intriguing D3/NAIA prospect.
SG Joshua Evans (Crete Monee – 2018)
Evans emerged on our radar with a strong performance at the Team Rose Shootout. The 6’4” senior shooting guard shot the ball well especially pulling up from 15-18 feet. Balanced and clean shooting stroke. Gets to his spots and lets it fly. Also active on the defensive end getting steals and taking it the other way. Evans had 23 points. Worth consideration at the D3/NAIA/JUCO levels.
SG Malik Hardmon (Crete Monee – 2018)
Hardmon was another Crete player that broke out Sunday. He is a strong 6’5” shooting guard that is powerful around the hoop. Finished very well at the rim attacking the hoop and owning the glass from his guard position. Good athlete that can get out in transition. Hardmon went for 22 points. Small college kid.
PG Tyrese Hunt (Crete Monee – 2018)
Hunt is a 6’2” point guard that has good size on the perimeter. He is a lefty that is best shooting the ball off the catch. Also hit a baseline pull up and had a big dunk late. Went for 12 points. Small college prospect.
SG Javion May (Hope – 2018)
May impressed us over the summer when we saw him with the Chicago Demons and stood out again in their game against Providence St. Mel. The shooting guard has such a quick burst with the rock whether in transition or the half court. Gets to the rim at a high rate which is where he scores most of his points. Slow release on jumper. Very competitive kid. He had 19 points. D3 or NAIA prospect.
SG Javari McClendon (Hope – 2018)
Came away impressed with this 6’2” physical shooting guard. Power guard is a tough rebounder and scores on the interior getting on the offensive glass and finishing through contact. He had 14 points. Small college prospect.
