Sunkist Shootout: Day 1 Preview
Big Games:
Riverside vs. Evangel
So far this season, no one has been able to keep up with the pace that Riverside has set, and that all starts with one man: Jared Butler. Butler has been on an absolute scoring tear so far this season, and even the best of the best have been unable to keep up. He went for 46 in an incredible double overtime win over Madison Prep and had 33 in a highly anticipated matchup over Javonte Smart and Scotlandville. I don’t think that Evangel is going to have the recipe to slow Butler down, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Evangel doesn’t sneak up on the Rebels. Evangel doesn’t have a very good record, but they have played some tough teams closer than you might expect. I’m going to go with Riverside, but in a closer game than most would expect.
PHLA Pick: Riverside
Rummel vs. Teurlings
Rummel has had a bit of a rough go there past couple over games, losing 4 of their last 5, including going just 1-3 in the Country Day Classic. Granted, they have played a very tough slate their last 5, but losing 4 straight at one point can’t be what they were looking for. This game against Teurlings gives them the opportunity to get back on track, and build a bit of momentum before heading into the next round and taking a crack at juggernaut Riverside.
PHLA Pick: Rummel
Ascension vs. St. Thomas More
I don’t expect this to be a particularly close matchup, but I do think that it will be an entertaining one for one reason: Eli Mouton. This is going to be Eli’s 4th trip to the Sunkist, and he has put on a show every year so far, so I don’t expect much to change this year. I expect St. Thomas More to throw out a press to get the ball out of Eli’s hands, but I also think that there will be a few opportunities for highlight plays for Mouton.
PHLA Pick: St. Thomas More
