Detroit Country Day forward Demetriess Champion was a bright spot in tough loss against Detroit Catholic Central. The junior looked great returning from injury and finished with 18 points, 8 rebounds and 2 blocks.
Here’s our take on Champion’s game:
Athleticism – Demetriess displays good verticality in tight spaces off both 1 and 2 legs. He has plus lateral agility and is fluid in general. Very strong with a good frame and runs the floor well.
Soft Touch/Good Finishing – Champion has soft touch around the rim, rarely do his shot attempts in the paint hit the backboard or draw front rim. He converts at a high rate at the basket.
Rebounding – the athletic forward has a good motor and pursues the ball well, especially on the offensive glass where he gives multiple jumps and will rebound outside of his frame.
Rim Protection – Demetriess is a good helpside shotblocker and rim protector. He has good timing when altering shots and does not foul. Will cover lots of ground to make rotations.
Areas for Development:
Ball Skills – right now Champion is capable of taking a few dribbles to attack a closeout or in the open court, but he needs to continue developing his ballhandling skills and playmaking ability in order to become more proficient on the perimeter.
Shooting – while we didn’t see Demetriess attempt a jumpshot in the game, his free throws seemed to indicate that he needs work on his shot. If he can develop a reliable midrange jumper, his potential goes through the roof considering his size and athletic abilities.
