Cass Tech senior Jalen Tobias took full advantage of his opportunity in the spotlight at the Battle for the Best on Saturday at Southfield High School.
The 6’6 combo-forward displayed a versatile skillset that makes him an ideal prospect in an era of position-less basketball.
Here’s our take on Jalen’s game:
Ball Skills – Tobias is a good ballhandler for his position and is very good at grabbing a defensive rebound and pushing the ball up the court in transition. He also shows ability to attack closeouts in the half court and is a good high-low passer from the top of the key.
Good Midrange Shooter – Tobias knocks down midrange shots in the 15-18 foot range with consistency. The shot is fluid with a high release point and good arch.
Athleticism – Jalen is a fluid athlete that has above average verticality, strength and agility. While some prospects look like great athletes in a layup line, Tobias puts his athletic abilities to use functionally by absorbing contact, outrunning the opposition and high-pointing rebounds.
Ambidexterity – Jalen is one of the most unique prospects in the state, as he is a superb finisher with his left hand while shooting jumpshots and free throws with his right hand exclusively. This makes it very difficult to scout against Tobias and even more difficult to guard.
Back to the Basket Game – Jalen is a scoring option in the post, as he has a nice jump hook over his right shoulder and has the quickness to beat larger defenders facing up to the basket.
Versatility – this is perhaps the best part of Tobias’ game, as he can play multiple spots on the court at both ends. He has the ball skills to play the wing, while having the size and strength to be a more traditional combo-forward with his athleticism and ability to score on the block and run pick and pop action.
Areas for Development:
Extend Range – while Jalen has a nice midrange shot, extending his shooting range out to three would make him nearly impossible to defend. Based on his shooting mechanics, developing a three ball is a reasonable expectation with continued development. If that happens, he’s going to be an absolute mismatch for the opposition.
